2025 Seed Grant
This funding opportunity provides $5,000 in unrestricted support to emerging organizations in Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington, or Wyoming that are focused on community organizing and align with social justice values.
The Social Justice Fund (SJF) has opened its 2025 Seed Grant cycles to support emerging organizations involved in or moving toward community organizing. SJF, a philanthropic organization committed to social justice and grassroots movements, is offering these Seed Grants to aid groups that are still in the formative stages of development and might not yet meet the criteria for traditional funding opportunities. Each selected organization will receive a one-year grant of $5,000 in unrestricted funds to help strengthen and expand their efforts. These grants are aimed specifically at organizations that are less than three years old, have never been funded by SJF, and are actively engaged in or planning community organizing work. Eligible organizations must operate in one of five states: Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington, or Wyoming. Groups must also align with SJF’s values and demonstrate their commitment to community accountability, grassroots leadership, and strategic development for growth over the coming year. Organizations with a 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(4) status, tribal governments, or those with fiscal sponsorships through such entities are eligible. SJF has structured this program to provide three rounds of Seed Grants during 2025, with funding decisions made quarterly. The application deadlines are February 20, May 29, and September 4 for Q1, Q2, and Q3 respectively. Review and funding decisions will follow at the end of each respective quarter. Funds will continue to be awarded until the annual allocation is exhausted. The initiative places particular priority on rural and BIPOC-led organizations and those operating in reservation or small-town communities. Applicants will be evaluated based on alignment with SJF’s values, engagement with impacted communities, and a clear plan for growth and organizing. The grant does not fund individuals and strictly requires applicants to be organized groups. SJF provides an informational session to guide potential applicants and encourages those uncertain of their eligibility to reach out to the Grantmaking & Impact team for clarification. SJF emphasizes inclusivity and representation in its funding approach and encourages wide sharing of this opportunity. Organizations interested in applying are advised to review the community organizing criteria outlined by SJF to ensure their eligibility. Updates and additional information can be found via SJF’s social media channels and website.
