Nisqually Watershed Small Grants
This funding opportunity supports community-driven environmental projects that enhance water quality and habitat in Pierce County's major watersheds, targeting nonprofits, schools, tribes, local governments, and individuals.
The Nisqually Watershed Small Grants Program is a locally administered initiative designed to support community-based projects that promote environmental restoration, education, and stewardship in the Nisqually Watershed region of Pierce County, Washington. This grant is part of the broader Watersheds Small Grants Program facilitated by Pierce County, which also serves the Chambers-Clover and Puyallup-White River Watersheds. Funding is targeted toward grassroots efforts that align with the mission and goals outlined in the Nisqually Watershed Stewardship Plan. The program emphasizes projects that improve water quality, restore habitats, engage communities, and promote sustainable natural resource management. Grant awards are capped at $2,500 per project, with the funds disbursed upfront. This means recipients do not need to front expenses and seek reimbursement—a significant benefit for smaller organizations or individuals with limited cash flow. Grantees are required to provide documentation of actual expenses and submit a final report to Pierce County by July 31, 2027. A presentation to the Nisqually Watershed Council is also expected in 2027 to share outcomes and insights from funded work. Funds are generally released about a month after required tax forms and W-9 documentation are submitted. For individual applicants unaffiliated with a school, government body, or nonprofit, a fiscal sponsor is required to receive grant funds. Applications must be submitted by May 6, 2026. Prospective applicants are encouraged to attend an online office hours session on March 25, 2026, from 3–5 p.m., where they can discuss ideas directly with grant administrators and receive feedback on the application process. During this session, administrators will be available for real-time guidance and suggestions to improve project proposals and ensure alignment with grant expectations. Eligible applicants include individuals, nonprofit organizations, schools, teachers, tribes, and government agencies. The application form requests basic applicant and organizational information, a project description, budget, and timeline, along with evaluation responses. Specifically, applicants must explain how their project aligns with the Nisqually Watershed Stewardship Plan, describe environmental impacts and long-term goals, outline community engagement strategies, identify resource-efficiency measures, and detail how their work addresses environmental justice and leverages additional financial or partner resources. Evaluation of proposals is based on completeness, clarity, budget justification, and alignment with the watershed council’s mission. Reviewers look for projects that provide clear environmental benefits, strengthen community ties, and support the long-term health and sustainability of the watershed. Projects are expected to demonstrate thoughtful design, achievable goals, and the ability to be implemented successfully within a defined timeframe. Whether the project will continue in the absence of funding and whether a reduced grant award would be acceptable are also considered. The Nisqually Watershed Small Grants Program offers an accessible and strategic opportunity for community members and organizations to contribute to the stewardship of local natural resources. By aligning with regional watershed goals and supporting on-the-ground activities that benefit both ecosystems and communities, the program represents a meaningful investment in the long-term resilience of the Nisqually watershed.
