Grant Description

The Duke Energy Foundation’s Workforce Development Grants program is designed to strengthen the energy industry workforce pipeline by funding training and educational initiatives that prepare individuals for vital energy-sector jobs. Duke Energy, a major utility company operating in several states, including Ohio and Kentucky, supports communities it serves through philanthropic investments, with this grant program reflecting its commitment to regional economic vitality and skilled workforce development. This grant opportunity specifically targets programs that equip individuals with training for energy industry jobs. The funder prioritizes several categories of programs in descending order of preference: first, workforce development training directly aligned with energy-sector employment, such as lineworker and engineering programs at community colleges and universities, or certification programs specific to energy trades. Second, it supports broader trades and training programs responding to regional workforce needs, including programs that offer licensing and certification or establish new training offerings. Third, the funder will consider initiatives that promote energy and engineering education and career readiness at the high school level, including professional development for teachers, out-of-school engineering engagement programs, and district-level education initiatives. The program aims to produce tangible outcomes such as upskilling credentials and demonstrable community impact by bolstering local economies. Although examples of eligible projects are provided, the list is not exhaustive, and inclusion does not guarantee funding. Grants typically range from $10,000 to $15,000 per award. This is a one-time grant opportunity, with applications due by April 30, 2026. Award announcements will be made by June 1 of the same year. Eligibility is limited to organizations that hold current tax-exempt status as public charities under Section 501(c)(3) of the IRS Code. Applicants must serve communities located in Duke Energy’s service areas in Ohio or Kentucky. Organizations must be able to demonstrate measurable program outcomes and must not discriminate based on race, creed, gender, gender identity, age, sexual orientation, or national origin. Several restrictions apply to the grant funding. The Foundation does not support churches, private foundations, for-profit organizations, or any entities involved in political advocacy or activities contrary to Duke Energy’s interests. Funding is also not available for individual schools (only district-level initiatives are considered), religious or sports programs, endowments, general operating expenses, utility subsidies, or capital improvements. Applications must be submitted through the provided online portal. Applicants with questions may contact Kim Vogelgesang at Kim.Vogelgesang@duke-energy.com. Supporting materials such as a sample application and budget template are also available to aid in the submission process. This is a non-recurring grant cycle, meaning no future rounds have been announced.
