Grant Description

Michigan’s AmeriCorps 2026–2027 Formula Funds is a competitive state-level grant opportunity administered by the Michigan Community Service Commission (MCSC), which serves as the state’s official administrator for AmeriCorps State funding. The program is supported by AmeriCorps, the federal agency responsible for funding national and community service initiatives throughout the United States. MCSC uses national service as a tool to address the state’s most critical needs, coordinating funding opportunities for organizations that plan to place AmeriCorps members in service throughout Michigan. The Formula Funds represent the portion of AmeriCorps’ annual allocation to the state that is not distributed competitively at the national level and is instead awarded at the discretion of the state commission. The primary objective of this funding opportunity is to engage AmeriCorps members in service activities that strengthen communities and improve lives across Michigan. Selected applicants will be required to deploy AmeriCorps members in evidence-informed or evidence-based interventions designed to meet community needs. Members may serve in areas such as education, economic opportunity, public safety, health, and environmental stewardship. Upon successful completion of service, AmeriCorps members receive a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award, which may be applied to higher education expenses or student loans. The grant supports operational costs associated with managing AmeriCorps members, including living allowances, training, supervision, and administrative expenses. Eligible applicants include Indian Tribes, institutions of higher education, local governments (including school districts), and nonprofit organizations. All applicants must register with the System for Award Management (SAM) and maintain an active registration throughout the life of the grant. Programs may apply under several formats, including Cost Reimbursement or Fixed Amount grants, with specific terms regarding living allowances and member service hours. New applicants may only apply for Cost Reimbursement and Education Award Program (EAP) models and must match at least 24% of project costs. This match requirement increases gradually for returning grantees over time. Waivers are available under specific conditions, particularly for Tribal entities. The funding period for awards made under this notice will not begin before August 1, 2026. The program start date must fall on the first of any month after that date, and program operations may not begin until the grant award is finalized and a fully executed contract is in place with the State of Michigan. The application process includes the submission of an Intent to Apply form and Organizational Readiness Assessment (both due April 6, 2026), followed by a complete application and all supplemental documentation by April 20, 2026. Funding announcements are expected by July 2026. Grants are issued for a three-year performance period, but only the first year is funded initially. Continuation funding is contingent upon satisfactory performance and future appropriations. Applicants must follow detailed instructions and prepare a strong narrative that demonstrates their capacity to effectively utilize AmeriCorps members to address clearly defined community problems. Review criteria include program design, community impact, evidence base, member experience, organizational capability, and member support. Applicants must also submit performance measures, a detailed budget, and any required supplemental documentation. Programs are expected to comply with all AmeriCorps regulations, including those related to National Service Criminal History Checks, data collection, and financial reporting. The grant does not support international projects or organizations operating outside of Michigan. Only single-state applicants serving within Michigan’s geographic boundaries are eligible. Programs must ensure their service activities do not displace employees or duplicate existing services. The Michigan AmeriCorps program also encourages participation in national service events such as Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service and 9/11 Day of Service. Organizations with questions about the application process may contact MCSC directly at [email protected] for additional guidance.
