The Bill Greenup Charitable Fund for Nonprofit Organizations

The Bill Greenup Charitable Fund honors the legacy of H. William “Bill” Greenup, a longtime public servant, Marine Corps colonel, and avid supporter of public libraries and education. A lifelong reader and history enthusiast, Bill dedicated himself to his community through decades of service, including positions on the Fredericksburg City Council, School Board, and numerous transportation and public service boards across Virginia. His contributions were instrumental in projects like the establishment of Virginia Railway Express service to Fredericksburg. Created by his daughter, M. Taylor Greenup, the fund reflects Bill's deep belief in the power of public education and literacy as tools for personal growth and civic engagement. Each year, the fund provides grant opportunities specifically for public-school librarians and library media specialists working in Fredericksburg City Public Schools. Grants from the Bill Greenup Charitable Fund aim to support students of all learning styles, backgrounds, and communities through initiatives in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and visual learning. Eligible projects are those that cultivate inclusive, age-friendly environments that are welcoming to multicultural and multilingual student populations. Applicants are encouraged to propose initiatives that inspire a lifelong love of learning and incorporate family outreach components. Applications for the 2025–2026 grant cycle open on September 15, 2025, and must be submitted by 5:00 PM on October 20, 2025. Award decisions are anticipated around November 24, 2025. All awarded funds must be utilized within ten months of the disbursement date. This program is administered through The Community Foundation, and applicants are encouraged to consult its general grant guidelines when preparing their submissions.
