Spark Connecting Community Grant Program
This grant provides funding to grassroots initiatives in Vermont that foster community connections and social collaboration, particularly in underrepresented counties, with a focus on projects led by small organizations.
The Spark Connecting Community grant program, administered by the Vermont Community Foundation, focuses on cultivating and reinforcing the social fabric of Vermont communities. This grassroots initiative is designed to support emerging local projects that foster social capital—defined as the value generated when individuals collaborate, bridge differences, and share place-based experiences. Increased social capital is positively associated with outcomes such as improved health, higher educational attainment, civic engagement, and resilience, all of which contribute to a community's overall vitality. This program is aimed at empowering local leaders and collaborative grassroots efforts, particularly those that bring people together through accessible and inclusive engagement. The Spark grant program encourages applications from hyperlocal initiatives (within a single town or small cluster of towns) as well as broader regional or statewide projects that are rooted in a shared identity or common interest. In 2026, additional priority will be given to applicants from underrepresented counties including Essex, Grand Isle, and Franklin, although the program remains open to applicants throughout Vermont. Projects must demonstrate a clear intention to increase access to opportunity, support positive social interaction, promote environmental stewardship, or strengthen community ties through acts of generosity. Specific examples of eligible initiatives include experiential learning for students, public art for downtown revitalization, nature trails promoting health and environmental education, and community dialogues focused on diversity and inclusion. Applicants must show evidence of community buy-in, such as volunteer engagement, collaborative planning, or additional sources of funding. The grant will not support capital campaigns (unless directly tied to community connection), recurring events, event sponsorships, or performance subsidies lacking direct community engagement. Similarly, individual applicants, projects with incurred expenses, indirect project expenses, or requests for general operating support are ineligible. Programs with religious instruction or seeking repeat support for a similar project are also excluded. Spark grants will range from $500 to $5,000 and must be used for activities occurring between May 2026 and May 2027. Only one application per organization will be funded each calendar year, even if multiple applications are submitted for different community projects. However, organizations acting as fiscal sponsors for other applicants remain eligible to apply on behalf of distinct initiatives. First-time grant seekers are encouraged to apply, and assistance is available during the application process. Applications for the 2026 cycle will be accepted from February 17 to March 31, with all submissions due by 5 PM on March 31. Applicants will be notified of award decisions in May. The Vermont Community Foundation evaluates submissions based on their potential to build social capital, demonstrate community engagement, and foster cross-difference connections.
