Grant Description

The Litter-Free Rhode Island Fall Cleanup Microgrant program is an initiative of the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (RIDEM) designed to promote environmental stewardship through small-scale community cleanups. This initiative supports local efforts that improve neighborhood aesthetics, enhance recreational spaces, and foster a culture of civic responsibility. The program specifically aims to highlight the goals of the Litter-Free Rhode Island campaign and to promote broader public awareness and education surrounding the importance of litter prevention and environmental care. Grants of up to $500 are available to qualified applicants to conduct volunteer-based litter cleanups or beautification efforts that take place on or before December 15, 2025. The application deadline is October 31, 2025, at 4:00 p.m., or until all funds have been allocated. All proposals must include a clear educational component and demonstrate how the project will promote the Litter-Free Rhode Island campaign. Applicants are strongly encouraged to engage participants in signing the Litter-Free Pledge as part of their initiative. To qualify, applicants must submit a completed application and registration form through the designated online system. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. Projects must be executed as proposed, with documented evidence submitted after completion. Required post-event documentation includes photographs, number of participants, quantity of material collected, and proof that the funds were used appropriately. Preference will be given to projects with strong educational value, long-term impact, demonstrated community need, and relevance to local environmental concerns. Allowable uses of grant funds include cleanup materials and supplies directly related to the beautification effort. Funds may not be used for personnel costs (including salaries and professional landscapers), travel or fuel expenses for item procurement, lobbying or political activities, or any costs incurred prior to the official grant award. RIDEM encourages all grantees to be environmentally conscious in their purchases, avoiding single-use plastics and minimizing waste. The Fall Cleanup Microgrant is one of several initiatives under the broader Litter-Free Rhode Island campaign, which promotes clean, healthy, and attractive communities through education and public engagement. Interested applicants with questions about eligibility or the application process should contact Suzanne Amerault at RIDEM via email at Suzanne.Amerault@dem.ri.gov. All projects must be completed by December 15, 2025, and all reporting requirements fulfilled to remain in good standing for future funding opportunities.
