Peer Supports for Augmentative and Alternative Communication
This funding opportunity provides financial support to organizations that will create peer support networks for individuals with speech disabilities, helping them access communication technologies and enhance their independence and community involvement.
The Department of Health and Human Services, through the Administration for Community Living (ACL), is forecasting a funding opportunity titled "Peer Supports for Augmentative and Alternative Communication." This initiative aims to establish a sustainable model of peer support for individuals who use or could benefit from Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) technologies. AAC encompasses methods of communication used by individuals with speech disabilities, including those with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). The core objective of this grant is to address the comprehensive needs of an estimated five million people in the United States who experience speech disabilities. The selected project will support individuals across their lifespans by fostering self-determination, independence, and community integration. Through peer support, the initiative seeks to create safe spaces where users of AAC can share experiences and enhance awareness and knowledge of AAC solutions tailored to their unique communication preferences. Funding will be delivered through a cooperative agreement, indicating substantial federal involvement in the execution of the project. ACL plans to fund a single three-year project, with an expected award range between $700,000 and $775,000. The project must involve a collaborative network that includes nonprofit community-based service providers, self-advocacy organizations, individuals who use AAC, and family members and others who are part of their support system. Eligibility for this grant is limited to entities specified in the opportunity, excluding foreign entities. The primary applicants must be domestic organizations with direct connections to the AAC user community and experience in peer support, advocacy, or service provision. The application process includes submitting materials by July 22, 2025, following the forecasted posting date of May 19, 2025. The anticipated project start date is September 1, 2025. Applications will be evaluated based on their ability to develop and implement inclusive and effective peer support models. These models should ensure access to necessary community services and promote meaningful community participation for individuals using AAC.
