The Juneau History Grant
This grant provides funding for projects that explore, document, and share the rich human history of Juneau, Alaska, encouraging community involvement and education through public-facing outcomes.
The Juneau History Grant (JHG) supports projects that advance the understanding, documentation, and sharing of the human history of the City and Borough of Juneau, Alaska. Administered by the Juneau-Douglas City Museum and advised by a local community committee with historical expertise, the grant is funded by the Friends of the Juneau-Douglas City Museum and the Juneau Community Foundation. This program aims to fund efforts that yield tangible, public-facing outcomes such as publications, presentations, exhibitions, performances, oral histories, and digital archives that preserve and promote local historical knowledge. The grant prioritizes projects that present new perspectives on Juneau history, encourage research, promote education, and inspire community volunteerism. Proposals must include a complete, realistic budget and demonstrate feasibility within a 12-month timeframe. Preference is given to projects that clearly articulate their historical significance, document their methodology through source lists or bibliographies, and involve committed participants or consultants with relevant knowledge. Typical funding levels range from $400 to $1,200, though the committee is open to reviewing all reasonable budgets within available funds. While most labor is expected to be volunteer-based, the grant can cover essential project costs, such as professional services (e.g., design, production), materials, and equipment rental. Purchases of equipment with value beyond the project scope, such as cameras or computers, will not be funded. Multi-year projects are eligible but must deliver a standalone public product for each funded year. All completed projects must yield a tangible result suitable for public access, such as a recording, transcript, video, publication, or display. A copy of the final product is to be delivered to the Juneau-Douglas City Museum, and all public-facing materials must credit the Juneau History Grant. Funded work must be completed within a year of the application deadline. The grant accepts applications twice a year, with due dates on April 3 and October 1. As of the current reference date, the next submission deadline is October 1, 2025. Applicants must submit a complete application, including responses to all questions and a detailed budget, to be considered. Submissions may be made online or by mail to the Juneau-Douglas City Museum. Handwritten or incomplete applications will not be reviewed. Prospective applicants are encouraged to reach out for assistance with their proposals or to view successful past examples. Inquiries can be directed to the museum at 907-586-3572 or museum.info@juneau.org.
