AARP Community Challenge – Flagship Grants
This funding opportunity supports nonprofits and government entities in creating quick-action projects that improve community spaces and services for residents aged 50 and older.
The AARP Community Challenge Flagship Grants are part of AARP’s broader initiative to foster more livable communities for people of all ages, especially adults age 50 and older. Administered by AARP, a national nonprofit with offices in all U.S. states and territories, the program aligns with the organization's mission to promote health, economic security, and community engagement for older Americans. The Flagship Grants were established in 2017 as part of AARP’s quick-action grantmaking strategy to accelerate change in local environments through small-scale but high-impact projects. Since inception, the broader AARP Community Challenge program has awarded more than 2,100 grants totaling $24.3 million. The 2026 Flagship Grant cycle supports projects that deliver tangible improvements to communities, ranging from short-term activities costing only a few hundred dollars to more comprehensive efforts with funding up to $15,000. While AARP notes that past grants have typically ranged between $10,000 and $12,000, applicants may request any amount within the ceiling based on project scope and justification. These funds are intended to catalyze long-term change by enabling quick-start initiatives that address one or more strategic focus areas. Eligible project categories include the creation of vibrant public places such as parks and open spaces, expansion of mobility options including pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure, and increasing the availability of affordable, accessible housing. Other eligible themes involve enhancing digital connections and improving digital literacy, as well as strengthening community resilience in the face of disasters through preparedness and mitigation initiatives. All projects must benefit residents, with a particular emphasis on those aged 50 and older. To qualify, applicants must be either a 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), or 501(c)(6) nonprofit organization, or a government entity. Other organization types may be considered on a case-by-case basis, but for-profit companies and individuals are not eligible. Projects must align with AARP’s mission and meet additional criteria including community relevance, innovation, and a clear plan for execution. Ineligible uses of funds include political or election-related activities, vehicle or property purchases, and projects that lack community engagement or tangible outcomes. Applications must be submitted through AARP’s online application portal no later than 5:00 p.m. ET on March 4, 2026. Attendance at the optional Q&A webinar on January 27 is encouraged but not required. Selected applicants will be notified by email in May and will be required to complete a grant agreement and vendor registration by June 10, 2026. Projects must be fully implemented by December 15, 2026, and an After-Action Report must be submitted by December 31, 2026. Evaluation criteria for the Flagship Grants prioritize community impact (60 points), execution capacity (30 points), and innovation (10 points). The program does not allow rolling submissions. As such, prospective applicants are advised to adhere closely to the stated timeline and prepare materials in advance. AARP reserves the right to determine final award amounts and select projects based on internal panel review.
