Event Waste Reduction Grant Program

The Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio (SWACO) offers the Event Waste Reduction Grant (EWRG) to support local event organizers in their efforts to minimize landfill waste and promote sustainable practices. SWACO is a local government agency focused on waste reduction and diversion strategies in Franklin County, Ohio, and surrounding areas. This grant serves as a strategic investment into events that align with SWACO’s mission to reduce reliance on the Franklin County Sanitary Landfill by supporting innovative waste reduction, recycling, food donation, and composting initiatives. The EWRG provides reimbursement-based funding for activities that directly reduce waste generated during public events held within SWACO’s jurisdiction. These activities may include infrastructure investments such as recycling stations and compost bins, as well as educational outreach aimed at increasing public awareness and participation in waste diversion. The goal is to create lasting improvements in how events manage and mitigate their environmental impact. Funding amounts range from a minimum of $500 to a maximum of $6,000. A 20% cash contribution from the applicant is required to receive funding. Purchases made prior to the execution of a signed grant agreement are not eligible for reimbursement. This ensures that projects are officially sanctioned and meet the necessary requirements before public funds are allocated. Organizers are also encouraged to utilize SWACO’s container loan program and consult best-practice guides to enhance their event waste strategies. This pre-application consultation can provide valuable guidance on the scope, timing, and design of eligible projects, helping applicants align their proposals with program goals. SWACO staff are available to provide technical assistance and ensure proposed efforts are impactful and compliant with guidelines. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and evaluated individually throughout the year. However, applications must be submitted at least eight weeks prior to the scheduled event date. This ensures adequate time for review, award processing, and agreement execution before any reimbursable expenditures are made. There are no fixed deadlines, which offers flexibility to applicants planning events at different times of the year. Since its inception in 2016, the EWRG has supported 29 local events, diverting more than 146,000 pounds of recyclable and compostable material from the landfill. Previous awardees include a wide range of community festivals and cultural events, showcasing the grant’s adaptability to different event sizes and scopes.
