Special Project Grants

The Special Projects Grant is administered by the Florida Keys Council of the Arts to provide targeted funding support for arts-based initiatives within Monroe County, Florida. The Council, a local organization dedicated to supporting creative expression in the Florida Keys, manages multiple grant programs for artists and arts organizations, including this unique funding stream intended for projects that fall outside the scope of more traditional grant categories. The Special Projects Grant reflects the Council’s commitment to cultivating innovation and accessibility in the local arts sector by responding to one-time or emergent needs that merit support but lack appropriate funding channels. This grant aims to offer short-term support for creative initiatives that are vital to the local cultural landscape but do not align with the criteria of existing grant programs. By focusing on one-off, innovative efforts, the program enables artists and organizations to explore creative risk-taking, interdisciplinary work, or rapid response initiatives. These might include artistic installations, community engagement events, cultural collaborations, or exploratory art forms that require limited-time or one-time funding. Notably, funding through this grant can only be awarded once every three years per applicant, ensuring that a broad spectrum of new and diverse applicants can access support over time. Eligible applicants are arts organizations or individual artists based in Monroe County, Florida. Applications are reviewed and awarded based on the proposed project's creativity, feasibility, and potential impact on the community. Award amounts can be up to $2,000, though requests exceeding that amount may be considered depending on the availability of funds. Funding is issued on a reimbursement basis after the completion of the project and submission of a final report that includes both photographs and written documentation of the activity. All funded projects must be completed within one year from the date of award notification. Furthermore, all publicity and promotional materials related to the project must prominently feature the Arts Council’s logo and a specific acknowledgment of project sponsorship. This credit line also acknowledges contributions from the State of Florida’s Division of Cultural Affairs, the Florida Council on Arts and Culture, the National Endowment for the Arts, and private donors. The application process is streamlined through an online submission form. Applicants are advised to reach out to the Council directly for guidance on proposal development or to discuss project eligibility prior to submission. Arts Council board or staff members may conduct site visits to funded projects as part of the evaluation and accountability process. The Special Projects Grant accepts applications twice a year, with deadlines on June 30 and November 30. These recurring cycles allow for regular opportunities to propose new projects.
