Funds for Artists
This grant provides financial support to individual artists in central Ohio for creating new work, developing skills, and promoting their art to wider audiences.
The Greater Columbus Arts Council (GCAC) administers the 2026 Funds for Artists grant to support working artists residing in Franklin County, Ohio. GCAC, a local nonprofit organization with a mission to champion and elevate the arts and cultural expression of Greater Columbus, has been advocating for artistic expression since 1973. Its work is funded by the City of Columbus through the bed tax and admission tax, as well as Franklin County support. In 2026, due to changing economic conditions, GCAC is approaching its grantmaking with caution but remains committed to maximizing support for the local creative sector. The 2026 Funds for Artists grant program is designed specifically to support individual working artists. Its primary purpose is to help artists create new work, improve their artistic skills, or expand their reach through marketing and promotional efforts. Eligible uses of funding include costs associated with materials and supplies, tool rentals or purchases, space rental for rehearsals or exhibitions, post-production services, promotional video creation, website and logo design, and professional development opportunities such as classes or residencies. Artists may also request funding for travel costs if the travel is connected to confirmed formal artistic opportunities such as paid performances, residencies, or conferences. The grant award amount is up to $750 per artist. This grant is open to adult individual artists (18 years and older) working in disciplines including dance, fashion, film (including documentary), literary arts, music, theater, visual arts, and multidisciplinary practices. Applicants must meet GCAC’s criteria for a "working artist," which includes having a demonstrable body of work, being compensated for their art, regularly engaging with the public through their work, and maintaining an active artistic practice. Applicants must have resided in Franklin County for at least one year prior to applying and must remain in the county for one year following any award. The program explicitly excludes undergraduate students, influencers, stylists, models, culinary artists, producers, engineers, content creators, DJs, and those creating work solely with AI. Applications are submitted online through GCAC’s application portal and open on June 1, 2026, closing on October 1, 2026, by 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Due to limited funds, incomplete or ineligible applications will not be reconsidered. Applicants are strongly encouraged to attend or view GCAC grant workshops and consult with staff before submitting their applications. Required materials include an artist resume demonstrating qualifications as a working artist, and up to five samples of original artistic work or a link to a portfolio website. For travel-related expenses, applicants must submit proof of invitation or registration to the event. The review process for this grant is non-competitive. GCAC staff will evaluate submissions solely for eligibility and completeness. Applicants will be notified of decisions within 60 days of submission. Approved grantees must sign a digital grant agreement, after which funds will be disbursed via ACH direct deposit. The funds must be spent within nine months of the award date. A final report is required within that period, and failure to submit may result in ineligibility for future GCAC grants. If necessary, extensions must be requested in writing before the report deadline. GCAC encourages grantees to acknowledge public support by promoting their award through personal or professional channels, such as social media and newsletters. Technical support is available throughout the application period. Artists with disabilities can receive assistance from Art Possible Ohio, and GCAC provides public computer access upon request. Overall, the Funds for Artists grant is a streamlined, artist-centered opportunity focused on supporting the creation, growth, and visibility of artistic work in Franklin County.
