Smiles for Kids Grant
This grant provides funding to nonprofit organizations in North Carolina for programs that promote children's oral health, particularly for underserved and at-risk populations.
The Smiles for Kids Grants Program, sponsored by Delta Dental of North Carolina through its philanthropic arm, the Delta Dental Foundation (DDF), supports initiatives that improve children’s oral health across the state. Founded in 1980, the DDF furthers the mission of Delta Dental by enhancing dental education and increasing access to oral health services, especially in underserved communities. This targeted grant program reflects their commitment to educational and preventive measures that contribute to the long-term well-being of children. The program provides grants to nonprofit organizations throughout North Carolina, with an emphasis on projects that promote or improve oral health in underserved or at-risk child populations. Funded initiatives typically include educational components and direct services that advance oral health awareness and access. Since its inception, the program has granted over $1 million to more than 80 organizations across 52 counties, positively impacting over 500,000 children and families. The focus on underserved areas ensures that support reaches communities where traditional funding and services may be lacking. Smiles for Kids grants are limited to a maximum of $5,000 and are not intended for capital campaigns, general overhead, or administrative expenses. Funding is prioritized for programs lacking alternative financial support. While exceptions may occur, the foundation generally avoids funding construction projects or salaries. Applications are reviewed individually based on factors such as program quality, community need, service scope, fundraising integrity, and local support. Each program’s alignment with DDF’s mission plays a central role in evaluation. Eligibility is restricted to nonprofit organizations operating in North Carolina. Organizations may submit only one application per year, and previous grantees may reapply if they include a detailed impact report. Applications must demonstrate clear oral health benefits for children and cannot be used for individual grants, political campaigns, commercial endeavors, or projects that involve discriminatory practices. For the 2026 grant cycle, applications open on October 13, 2025, and close on January 11, 2026, at 11:59 PM Eastern Time. The grant program operates on an annual cycle, and successful applicants must provide reporting documentation as a condition of future eligibility. Interested parties can contact the Delta Dental Foundation at DDF@deltadentalmi.com for further information. Program guidelines and application forms are made available online, and support is offered to ensure equitable access to the application process. This recurring program fosters sustainable community-level improvements by supporting initiatives that promote long-term oral health education and access for children in North Carolina.
