Grant Description

New Music USA’s New Music Organization Fund is a private funding initiative supporting nonprofit and community-based organizations deeply engaged with the creation, performance, and promotion of new music. New Music USA, a leading force in music philanthropy, aims to advance and amplify the work of music creators across genres by providing financial support to the organizations that collaborate with and present them. The Organization Fund aligns with New Music USA’s broader commitment to fostering equity, creativity, and community within the music ecosystem. The fund is designed for organizations with an established track record of programming and engaging with music creators, providing key support for artistic creation and community engagement. Applicants may request funding for one of three focus areas: General Operating Support, which sustains overall organizational activities involving living U.S.-based music creators; Creation of New Work, which supports the commissioning and performance of entirely new compositions; or Live Music for Dance, which funds the costs of live musical accompaniment for dance performances. Organizations can request up to $10,000, with the average award typically around $7,000. Funds for the 2026 cycle are provided in part by the Fifth House Ensemble and various state and city cultural entities, including the New York State Council on the Arts and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs. Applicants must be U.S.-based organizations with a minimum of three years of budgeted programming experience and an average annual budget between $5,000 and $3 million over the past three fiscal years. Organizations need not be registered 501(c)(3) entities; fiscally sponsored groups are welcome to apply. However, individuals and universities are not eligible. For applicants seeking general operating support, the endorsement of an artist or community stakeholder is required. Those applying for project-based support must provide an artistic letter of support from the collaborator(s) involved. Applications must also include recent financial statements, a three-year budget overview, and work samples highlighting artistic output and community impact. The application period opens on February 19, 2026, and closes on March 19, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. ET. Prospective applicants are encouraged to attend an informational webinar on March 5, 2026, and a Q&A session on March 11, 2026. Both will be recorded and made available online. Applications must be submitted via the SMApply portal, and late or email submissions will not be accepted. Following submission, applications undergo eligibility screening and peer panel review. Each application is evaluated by at least three independent reviewers based on artistry, community value, and organizational readiness and need. Applicants will be notified of funding decisions by late June 2026, with public announcements anticipated in August. Funded activities must occur between July 2026 and June 2027 for General Operating Support recipients. Project-based grants (Creation of New Work or Live Music for Dance) may extend through June 2028, depending on the proposed project timeline. Grantees will be required to submit documentation of funded activities and a final report by July 2027. Organizations that receive a grant through this program in 2025 are not eligible to apply again in 2026; they may reapply in the 2027 cycle. The New Music Organization Fund is a recurring opportunity that supports approximately 70–80 organizations each cycle. Given that only 5–10% of applicants typically receive funding, it is a highly competitive process. Notably, at least 25% of funds are allocated to projects involving the creation of new work, another 25% to live music for dance, and the remaining 50–60% to general support. There are also geographic restrictions tied to specific funders: a portion of funds is designated for New York City and State, with a small percentage reserved for the California Bay Area. The remaining budget is available nationwide.
