Request for Grant Proposals for AARP Connecticut Livable Communities Grant 2025
This funding opportunity provides financial support to nonprofit organizations and municipal governments in Connecticut for innovative projects that improve the quality of life for residents aged 50 and older by enhancing community livability.
The AARP Connecticut Livable Communities Grant is a targeted funding initiative offered by AARP Connecticut, part of the national AARP organization, a nonprofit dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for people aged 50 and older. AARP’s mission includes supporting age-friendly communities that offer safe, walkable streets, affordable and appropriate housing, transportation options, access to services, and ample opportunities for civic engagement and social participation. The Connecticut-based grant program aligns with AARP’s broader Community Challenge Grant initiative by promoting immediate improvements in communities that contribute to long-term livability for residents of all ages and abilities. The primary goal of the Livable Communities Grant is to fund innovative projects that enhance the quality of life for older adults in Connecticut. Grant funds are intended to help communities jump-start tangible improvements across one or more of the eight Domains of Livability as defined by AARP. These domains include outdoor spaces and buildings, transportation, housing, social participation, respect and social inclusion, work and civic engagement, communication and information, and community and health services. Projects must focus on making neighborhoods more accommodating and welcoming for residents aged 50 and older. Funding is capped at $5,000 per award and must be used within 12 months of the award date. This is a one-time funding opportunity, not a multi-year grant. While the total program funding available has not been specified, the funds are to be used solely for direct project costs and not for ongoing operating expenses, capital expenditures, or activities such as studies without follow-up, land acquisition, or salary payments. Ineligible uses also include commercial endeavors, publication of books, and stand-alone meetings or events without broader community benefit. Eligible applicants include incorporated nonprofit organizations with 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(4) status and municipal governments in Connecticut. No other organization types or individuals are eligible to apply. Projects must serve communities located within the state and demonstrate alignment with AARP’s goals of fostering inclusive, accessible environments for older adults. Applications should be thoughtful, fully completed, and submitted electronically by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, August 15, 2025. The selection process involves a panel of AARP Connecticut staff and volunteers who will evaluate proposals based on a weighted point system totaling 100 points. Additional criteria considered during evaluation may include whether the applicant has previously received a grant, the project's level of innovation, and whether it is located in a Distressed Municipality as determined by the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development. The final selection is at the sole discretion of AARP. Successful applicants will be notified by email and will be required to sign and return a binding Memorandum of Understanding within nine days of notification. Questions about the grant or application process should be directed to CTLIVABLE@AARP.ORG. Applicants are reminded that the submission process is final and binding, and AARP reserves the right to cancel or suspend the program at its discretion.
