SpartanNash Foundation Grant
This grant provides funding to nonprofit organizations in Michigan, Minnesota, and Virginia that focus on addressing hunger, supporting military heroes, and promoting community engagement and career training.
The SpartanNash Foundation grant program is a philanthropic initiative operated by the SpartanNash Foundation, the charitable arm of SpartanNash, a company that distributes grocery products and operates retail stores throughout the United States. The Foundation is dedicated to supporting nonprofit organizations that align with its key focus areas of Hunger, Heroes, and Hope. These pillars reflect the Foundation’s commitment to addressing food insecurity, supporting military veterans and their families, and promoting community wellness and resilience. This grant opportunity exemplifies SpartanNash’s mission to positively impact the communities they serve by partnering with nonprofit organizations that share these values. The SpartanNash Foundation invites applications from 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations located within a 30-mile radius of any SpartanNash retail store, distribution center, or corporate/service office. This geographic requirement ensures that grant funds remain within the communities where SpartanNash operates and its employees live and work. To be considered, applicants must align with at least one of the Foundation’s three pillars. Organizations that do not meet the geographic or mission criteria are ineligible, as are individuals, endowments, elected officials, or applicants that do not adhere to the Foundation’s non-discrimination policy. Grants are reviewed quarterly by the SpartanNash Foundation Board of Trustees. In 2025, applications are due by 5 p.m. ET on the following Fridays: April 4, July 18, September 12, and December 12. Submissions must be sent as a single file to [email protected]. Applicants may only apply once per calendar year. Final decisions are typically communicated within two weeks following each board meeting. Before applying, organizations are encouraged to consult the Foundation’s FAQ section to ensure eligibility and alignment. Each grant application must include several mandatory components: a cover letter, a cover sheet, a proposal narrative, and a full financial package. The proposal narrative must detail the organization’s history, mission, current activities, staffing, and impact. It must also include a description of the proposed project, including its purpose, the population served, and expected outcomes. Applicants are asked to describe the specific need addressed, implementation plans, and any long-term sustainability or additional funding sources. Evaluation criteria must also be provided, along with a description of how success will be measured and communicated to stakeholders. The financial package must include audited financial statements (if available), current organizational and project budgets, a balance sheet, a statement of activities, functional expenses, a recent IRS Form 990, a copy of the IRS 501(c)(3) determination letter, and a completed W9 form. These requirements ensure a transparent application process and enable the Foundation to assess each applicant’s fiscal health and program viability. Overall, the SpartanNash Foundation’s grant program is designed to support mission-aligned, community-based nonprofits through a structured, transparent process. With quarterly deadlines and clear expectations, the Foundation maintains an ongoing commitment to supporting impactful projects that benefit communities within its operational footprint.
