Larson Family Foundation Grants
This grant provides financial support to nonprofit organizations and qualified government units in South Dakota to address basic human needs such as food, clothing, shelter, and education.
The Larson Family Foundation, established in 1990 by Dale Larson, the former CEO and President of Larson Manufacturing Company, is a private, non-profit philanthropic organization committed to enhancing the quality of life for residents of South Dakota. The Foundation was born from the Larson family's desire to contribute meaningfully to their community in Brookings and across the state, recognizing the scarcity of philanthropic institutions operating in South Dakota. Governed by a board of five members, including Dale Larson, Maree Larson, Carmelle Jackson, Bridget Larson Ennevor, and Robert Jostad, the Foundation meets biannually to evaluate grant applications and determine funding decisions. The Foundation’s grantmaking priorities are focused on basic human needs, including food, clothing, shelter, and education. Grants are awarded to 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations and qualified government units. Organizations must be based in South Dakota and cannot be individuals or for-profit entities. The Foundation favors funding for new, expanding, or sustaining program services, capital campaigns, and endowments. While general operating expenses such as salaries and administrative overhead are typically excluded, they may be considered if they directly support expanding program services. Additionally, the Foundation does not fund general fundraising, debt reduction, research, or events not integral to broader programs. The maximum grant award is $100,000, although grants can range from $800 up to the maximum. Most awarded grants average approximately $25,000. Funding may be offered on a multi-year basis, but awards are usually distributed annually, with additional funding contingent on the successful completion and evaluation of the prior year’s grant. Organizations must submit a final evaluation report at the end of the project period. If funds are not fully used within one year, they must be returned unless otherwise authorized. The application process begins with the submission of a Letter of Inquiry (LOI), which must include a brief organizational overview, a summary of the program for which funding is sought, and the amount requested. LOIs are accepted during two annual cycles: January 2 through February 15 and July 2 through August 15, due by midnight Central Time. Submissions are to be emailed to Laura at laura@sawmilltrust.com. If an LOI aligns well with Foundation priorities, applicants are invited to submit a full application, which is due by March 1 or September 1 depending on the cycle. Awards are announced following Board meetings held in May and November. The Foundation does not support proselytizing activities, although faith-based organizations operating inclusive, non-denominational programs are eligible. Additionally, the Foundation avoids involvement in medical equipment purchases, assisted living facilities, or political and economic development initiatives. In 2025, the Foundation will discontinue use of the eGrant platform and transition to fillable form submissions. All updated information and forms are accessible via the Foundation’s Letter of Inquiry webpage. For any inquiries regarding eligibility, submissions, or application processes, interested organizations may contact Laura at the provided email.
