The Impact Initiative, administered by the Pulitzer Center, is designed to extend the reach and real-world influence of journalism it has previously funded. This program is aimed specifically at current and former Pulitzer Center grantees and fellows who are motivated to deepen the civic engagement and tangible outcomes stemming from their journalistic work. It promotes impact-driven journalism while ensuring adherence to the highest journalistic standards.
The initiative is open to journalists whose Pulitzer Center-supported projects were published on or after January 1, 2020, and covered one or more of the following themes: the ocean, rainforests, transparency and governance (including corruption and financial flows), climate and labor, health, racial justice, or AI accountability. Selected participants will receive grants ranging from $2,000 to $5,000, along with individualized guidance from the Pulitzer Center Engagement Team to support their impact efforts.
Funding from the Impact Initiative can be used in a variety of ways to amplify journalistic work. Supported activities include convening expert panels or public screenings, engaging directly with affected communities, presenting at policy-related forums, collaborating with educators to create curricula, or developing artistic interventions like street art or live performances to foster dialogue. Grantees can also use funding to build media partnerships, create multimedia adaptations such as podcasts or comics, or work with grassroots organizations to translate reporting into actionable community tools.
The application process is straightforward. Interested applicants must complete a questionnaire detailing their impact proposal and provide a proposed budget. The deadline for applications is November 9, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time. Applications are reviewed based on their potential to promote civic dialogue, educate stakeholders, and catalyze social change.
This initiative reflects the Pulitzer Centerโs broader strategy to empower newsrooms, advance public discourse on critical global topics, engage communities, and inspire youth engagement. By offering targeted financial support and mentorship, the Impact Initiative positions journalism as a dynamic tool for public engagement and societal transformation.
For inquiries, applicants are encouraged to contact gbrenes@pulitzercenter.org. Awards will be announced after the close of applications, and the timeline for project implementation will be determined in coordination with selected grantees.
