Grant Description

The Multnomah Athletic Foundation provides annual community grants designed to support programs that build youth confidence and character through athletic participation. The foundation places a strong emphasis on increasing access to sports for economically disadvantaged, underrepresented, and underserved youth. It aims to foster inclusion, personal development, and community connection through sport-based activities, primarily targeting youth within the Portland, Oregon metropolitan area. This includes Multnomah, Washington, and Clackamas counties. Eligible applicants must be registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations that are not classified as private foundations under section 509(a) of the Internal Revenue Code. Fiscal sponsors and individuals are not eligible. Priority is given to organizations that serve youth with limited access, demonstrate financial and operational viability, and have both short- and long-term strategic plans. Startups and established nonprofits are both eligible, provided they meet these criteria. Organizations must also provide current fiscal year financial documents and may be asked to submit project budgets tied to the requested funding. The foundation’s grant cycle begins with an application and grant report portal opening on March 1, with submissions due by June 1. Funding decisions are made by September 22. Grants are awarded for a one-year period, and applicants are expected to complete an annual report detailing the grant’s impact on youth athletic participation. Previous grantees must fulfill all reporting obligations before being considered for new funding. Starting in 2025, the application includes a new question about the percentage of the organization’s programming dedicated to athletics. This information is used to better understand the organization’s focus and to tailor follow-up questions appropriately. The foundation’s funding is unrestricted and supports operational costs, staffing, training, program development, expansion efforts, capital expenditures such as equipment and facilities, and strategic fundraising planning. The average grant awarded ranges from $7,500 to $10,000, though amounts as low as $3,000 may be given. While each application is considered individually, partial funding is common, particularly for first-time applicants. Organizations are encouraged to align their requests with a sustainable fundraising strategy. To apply, users must create a portal account to access and submit applications or reports. Drafts can be saved and edited before submission, and assistance is available for corrections. The foundation encourages organizations to participate in optional Q&A sessions to learn more about the grant process. For inquiries or support, applicants can contact the foundation via email at info@multnomahathleticfoundation.com or by phone at 503-517-2350.
