Grant Description

The Local Roots Grant is a funding initiative developed by Northern State University (NSU) with support from the South Dakota Board of Regents. This grant aims to enhance economic development in northeast South Dakota by strengthening the region’s agriculture, environmental solutions, and health, food, and nutrition sectors. The program aligns with the South Dakota Science and Technology Plan 2030 and is part of a broader effort to promote entrepreneurship and support local startups. It also integrates academic engagement by involving undergraduate students in funded projects to provide them with hands-on experience and strengthen ties between students and the local business community. Eligible applicants for the Local Roots Grant are small businesses that are already operational or those with a clearly defined business plan for launching services by December 31, 2026. The program requires any business that has not yet launched to participate in an eight-week "Idea to Market" program offered by the Northern Innovation and Startup Center. This program, which runs virtually and in-person during the spring, is designed to support aspiring entrepreneurs in refining their business plans. A meeting with the South Dakota Small Business Development Center is also mandatory for all recipients before the disbursement of funds. The grant offers up to $5,000 per business, with a total of $15,000 available for distribution. Funded businesses must also host 1–2 undergraduate students who will provide assistance in areas such as marketing, outreach, communications, and field work. Each student is expected to contribute 15 hours of service by December 1, 2026. This requirement underscores NSU’s commitment to experiential education and community engagement. Applications must be submitted by email as either a Word document or PDF to Dr. Samantha St. Clair at [email protected]. The application cycle is currently open, and applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, with earlier submissions receiving priority. Required components include the application form and, if applicable, a business plan based on the guidelines provided in the call for applications. Proposals will be evaluated based on feasibility, clarity, public benefit to the Aberdeen area, and the quality of the business plan if required. Proposals that include unallowable costs such as salaries, stipends, or travel insurance will be adjusted accordingly. Notification of awards will include next steps for student engagement, and business owners will be supported in connecting with student assistants. The Local Roots Grant presents a compelling opportunity for small businesses in northeast South Dakota to expand their services while contributing to workforce development and providing meaningful learning experiences for students.
