The Classics for Kids Foundation (CFKF) Instrument Matching Grant Program supports schools and nonprofit organizations that seek to enhance music education for children in kindergarten through 12th grade. The grant helps provide high-quality string instruments through a matching funds model, fostering sustainable, community-supported music programs. Applications are accepted quarterly, with deadlines on March 31, June 30, September 30, and December 31.
Eligible applicants must be nonprofit organizations or schools serving students in grades Kโ12. CFKF does not make grants to individuals, and all applicants must demonstrate both need and commitment by raising matching funds equivalent to at least 50% of the instrument cost. CFKF determines final pricing and sourcing through its authorized provider, Kirk Violins. The grant covers violins, violas, cellos, double basses, guitars, and ukuleles in various sizes, depending on program needs.
Applications must be complete and include a signed form, IRS determination letter, and two letters of supportโone from the governing body and another from a school official or community supporter. Programs must have existing or planned infrastructure to support the instruments, including sufficient storage, responsible maintenance, and teaching capacity.
Applicants are required to raise their matching funds within one year of applying. Instruments are shipped once full payment (from both CFKF and the grantee) is received. Grantees are responsible for some shipping costs, depending on the size of the order, and must follow specific procedures for acceptance and, if needed, returns. Within three months of receiving the instruments, awardees must submit an evaluation form and publicity materials, including photos and a written summary.
CFKF emphasizes community involvement and capacity-building in music education and reserves the right to modify grant terms in cases of incomplete funding or instrument dissatisfaction. The program reflects CFKFโs mission to empower access to quality music education by providing durable instruments to under-resourced programs across the United States.
