Grant Description

The Talk Story: Sharing Stories, Sharing Culture grant is a family literacy funding initiative jointly administered by the Asian Pacific American Librarians Association (APALA) and the American Indian Library Association (AILA). These two organizations are committed to uplifting the voices and stories of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander (AANHPI), and American Indian and Alaskan Native (AIAN) communities through culturally relevant programming. The initiative supports library and community organization efforts to deliver family-oriented literacy experiences that promote intergenerational cultural exchange and challenge mainstream Anglocentric narratives. This grant aims to provide access and opportunity for libraries and community organizations to host events, develop collections, and create programming centered around AANHPI and AIAN cultures. The program emphasizes culturally rich, interactive experiences that include books, oral storytelling, art, and other media. The central mission is to affirm the intersectional identities within these communities while fostering family literacy through engaging content that resonates with their histories and traditions. Importantly, the program also seeks to disrupt colonial frameworks and support authentic representation and agency for these communities. Each year, four grants of $800 are awarded—two through APALA and two through AILA. These funds may be used to purchase books and audiovisual materials, acquire supplies for arts and crafts activities, and cover programming costs such as storyteller fees. However, at least 25% of funds must be allocated toward library materials, and no more than 10% can be spent on refreshments and decorations. Programs supported by the grant must include at least one culturally themed event for children and families at the recipient institution. Virtual programs are also eligible for funding. Eligibility for the grant is limited to libraries and community organizations based in the United States or its territories that serve AANHPI or AIAN children and families. Cross-border tribal organizations are also eligible. However, applicants who have already received two Talk Story grants in the past are not eligible to apply again. The application must include a Statement of Need, a Narrative detailing the proposed program, and a Proposed Budget. Applicants may apply for either an APALA or AILA grant, but not both in the same cycle. Applications are reviewed by a joint Family Literacy Focus Committee, composed of representatives from both APALA and AILA. The committee evaluates applications based on creativity, cultural authenticity, financial need, and community engagement. Special consideration is given to proposals that emphasize intergenerational programming, promote cultural literacy, and actively challenge stereotypes. Projects that decentralize colonial narratives and reflect community-led storytelling and leadership are highly encouraged. The grant cycle for 2026 opens on December 1, 2025, and applications must be submitted by March 15, 2026, at 11:59 PM AoE (Anywhere on Earth). Award announcements will be made by May 1, 2026. All awarded funds must be used by November 30, 2026, and final reports must be submitted no later than December 31, 2026. Interested applicants can submit their proposals through the online form provided on the APALA website. For additional information or questions, applicants can contact the APALA via email at [email protected] or reach out to AILA directly.
