Match on Main Grant

Match on Main is a grant initiative administered by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) to bolster place-based small businesses and revitalize commercial districts throughout Michigan. Aimed at building vibrant, resilient, and inclusive downtown economies, the program is a key part of MEDC’s broader community development strategy. Through Match on Main, funding is channeled into eligible communities to support locally selected small business projects, reinforcing local leadership and investment in economic growth. Since its inception, Match on Main has distributed $5.9 million in funding to small business projects across Michigan, resulting in a private investment leverage of $20 million. Approximately 91% of funded businesses remain operational, and participants have experienced an average annual revenue increase of $58,200. This strong economic impact is a testament to the program's emphasis on sustainability, private-public collaboration, and local decision-making. The structure of Match on Main is designed to empower local entities, rather than individual businesses, to submit applications, ensuring community alignment and equitable selection processes. Eligible Applicant Organizations include local units of government, Downtown Development Authorities (DDAs), Michigan Main Street organizations, and other recognized community development organizations. These organizations must be based in communities designated as Essentials or Certified Redevelopment Ready Communities® or as Select or Master level Michigan Main Street communities. They are responsible for identifying up to two local businesses per round to apply on their behalf, conducting outreach, facilitating selection, and administering the grant. The grant is reimbursement-only, with a maximum award of $25,000 per project. Funding is contingent upon full project completion, and only one lump-sum payment is allowed. The MEDC does not allow for advance, partial, or milestone-based payments. Eligible uses of funds include interior renovations, outdoor space activations, design and technical services, marketing, technology upgrades, point-of-sale systems, and some inventory purchases—provided they align with approved scopes and program guidelines. Applications must be submitted during a designated open period—anticipated to be March 1 through April 20, 2026. Only expenses incurred from the date of submission forward are considered eligible. Projects must be completed within 12 months of executing a grant agreement. Reimbursement requests, including full documentation, are due after project completion and subject to MEDC approval. This application structure ensures rigorous vetting, local prioritization, and clear accountability measures.
