Grant Description

Deschutes County is offering a 2025 Fall Fuel Reduction Grant Program to support community-scale efforts aimed at mitigating wildfire risks through short-term fuel reduction projects. The program has allocated $125,000 in total funding, available through June 30, 2026. Applications are being accepted between September 1 and September 30, 2025. Eligible applicants include neighborhoods or community organizations operating at a collective scale, as individual properties are not eligible. Competitive proposals will align with recognized wildfire safety frameworks such as Firewise USA™ and demonstrate a focus on creating defensible space around structures. Eligible activities for funding include equipment rentals, contracting for chipping or defensible space work, debris disposal, and supplies for coordinated community work parties. Although there are no strict award minimums or maximums, grants are expected to range from $100 to $5,000. Matching resources (cash, in-kind services, or volunteer time) are encouraged but not mandatory. All applicants must provide a tax identification number or apply with a fiscal sponsor who holds one. Applications will be evaluated based on several factors including existing or in-progress Firewise USA™ site status, alignment with community Firewise plans, the number of properties involved, defensible space work within 100 feet of structures, and demonstration of matching contributions. Deschutes County reserves the right to return incomplete applications for correction or clarification. Site visits may be conducted as part of the review process, and applicants will be notified of award decisions in early October 2025. Awarded communities must acknowledge Deschutes County in any public communications or promotional materials related to the grant-supported activities. Grant recipients are also required to submit a final report by June 30, 2026, documenting outcomes and verifying proper fund usage. All recipients must retain and, if requested, provide financial documentation for audit purposes. Failure to comply with post-award requirements may result in repayment obligations and ineligibility for future funding rounds. This program represents part of Deschutes County’s commitment to reducing wildfire vulnerability and fostering resilient communities through practical, collaborative mitigation strategies.
