Grant Description

The AIM-AHEAD All of Us Training Program, now accepting applications for its third cohort, is a targeted initiative developed in collaboration with the NIH All of Us Research Program and RTI International. The program is designed to build advanced capacity among professionals working at the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and health equity research. Through intensive data analysis training, selected trainees will gain hands-on experience using the All of Us Researcher Workbench and datasets, which include rich health information from a diverse participant pool across the United States. Running from November 17, 2025, through July 31, 2026, the program trains up to 25 individuals from a wide range of disciplines, including graduate students, postdocs, early-career faculty, and health professionals. It focuses on using AI/ML tools to address complex public health issues and promote equitable outcomes. This 8-month commitment includes asynchronous and live virtual training, expert mentorship, and collaborative learning via the AIM-AHEAD Connect platform. Applications are due by September 26, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time. Trainees will receive a stipend of $8,000 and an additional $2,000 travel allowance to attend the 2026 AIM-AHEAD Annual Meeting. The program is divided into two tracks: a General Track offering foundational and advanced learning paths in AI/ML, and a Genomics Track for applicants with prior experience in genetic data analysis and advanced programming. All trainees will analyze health data using Python, R, and Jupyter Notebook/R Studio. They will complete hypothesis-driven research projects using the All of Us dataset, with guidance from dedicated mentors and ML coaches. Projects will be presented at the AIM-AHEAD Annual Meeting, and some may be developed into manuscripts or abstracts for publication. Training topics include data modeling, hypothesis testing, AI/ML tool selection, data integration, and statistical validation. Genomics Track participants will engage in specialized content related to genomic science, with focused guidance from genomic data coaches. Participants are expected to devote an average of 8–9 hours per week, complete structured training on the Researcher Workbench, and regularly interact with assigned mentors and peer networks. Eligibility is open to U.S. Citizens, Permanent Residents, and Non-Citizen U.S. Nationals residing in the United States or U.S. Territories. Applicants must be affiliated with a U.S.-based institution eligible under the program, including nonprofits, higher education institutions, tribal governments, and other qualified organizations. Temporary visa holders and prior AIM-AHEAD trainees are not eligible. All applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree or higher in a related field such as public health, engineering, biological sciences, statistics, or data science. The application requires a personal statement, NIH biosketch or CV (maximum 5 pages), transcripts, and at least two letters of support, one confirming dedicated time for participation. Institutions must also hold an active Data Use and Registration Agreement (DURA) with the All of Us Program. Following program completion, trainees are expected to submit evaluation surveys and contribute actively to the AIM-AHEAD network through ongoing engagement and mentorship. This program represents a critical investment in training a diverse AI/ML-ready health research workforce and expanding the effective use of the All of Us dataset.
