Capital Grants
This funding opportunity supports nonprofit organizations in the Twin Cities that are focused on capital projects related to technology, career pathways, and arts and culture, provided they have previously received support from the Best Buy Foundation and have raised at least half of their campaign goal.
The Twin Cities Fund Capital Grant is an initiative of the Best Buy Foundation aimed at supporting nonprofit organizations aligned with its core philanthropic pillars of Teens and Technology, Career Pathways, and Arts and Culture. The grant is specifically focused on capital investments, offering substantial support for brick-and-mortar projects within the Twin Cities 7-county metropolitan area. This includes the construction, purchase, or renovation of buildings and facilities, as well as technology, software, hardware, or equipment purchases that may support the organization's mission. While technology and equipment may be part of the request, applicants are instructed not to specify that such items will be purchased from Best Buy. This opportunity is available only to organizations that have received support from the Best Buy Foundation within the last three years but have not previously received capital or capacity funding. Eligible applicants must have already raised at least 50% of their capital campaign goal and be in the public phase of their campaign. Organizations must also be headquartered in and exclusively serve communities within the Twin Cities 7-county metro area. Furthermore, they must be recognized as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit or tax-exempt public charity with a valid IRS Tax ID and be open to participating in site visits by Best Buy Foundation staff and board members. The application process begins with a mandatory eligibility quiz, followed by submission of a Letter of Intent (LOI) due between May 1 and May 30, 2025. Selected applicants will then be invited to submit a full application between July 1 and August 1, 2025. All applications must be submitted through Submittable, the Foundation's new grants management portal. Decisions will be announced by November 26, 2025, with funds disbursed within approximately 60 days of award acceptance. The grant period is up to one year. Applicants are evaluated based on a set of criteria including project feasibility and impact, community benefits, financial health, leadership involvement, and the presence of contingency plans. Required application documents include detailed project and organizational budgets, a capital campaign plan, audited financial statements, and a description of other funders. Optional documents may include strategic plans and additional supportive materials. The minimum grant award is $100,000, with a median amount of $200,000. The Foundation does not fund endowments, re-granting organizations, requests solely for supplies or donations, or projects tied to religious, political, or athletic purposes. Grantees are expected to submit an impact report one year after the distribution of funds, detailing financial outcomes, operational challenges, and community impact.
