Graduate Medical Education (GME) Grant Program
This funding opportunity supports Nevada institutions in creating or expanding accredited medical residency and fellowship programs to address physician shortages, particularly in underserved areas.
The Graduate Medical Education (GME) New and Expanded Program Grants – Round VIII is a statewide initiative led by the Nevada Health Authority (NVHA) to address physician shortages throughout the state by funding the creation, expansion, or retention of ACGME-accredited residency and fellowship programs. With a total of $15,826,125 available for distribution in this round, the GME program plays a critical role in supporting Nevada’s healthcare infrastructure, especially in underserved urban and rural communities. This effort is part of a longstanding commitment from the Nevada Governor and Legislature to expand healthcare access, and builds upon previous investment rounds totaling over $22 million since 2015. Eligible applicants include public or private institutions located in Nevada that either operate or propose to establish ACGME-accredited training programs. These institutions may be universities, hospitals, community health centers, or consortia thereof, including military-affiliated and Veterans Affairs entities. Priority is given to programs that train residents beyond their Medicare-funded capacity, and those that serve areas or specialties where physician availability falls below the national average. Proposals are expected to demonstrate strong potential for sustainability, clear alignment with the state’s physician workforce strategy, and an ability to serve high-need geographic regions or populations. Special consideration is given to applicants using innovative training models (e.g., telehealth), leveraging federal/private funding, and offering logistical support to trainees. Funding may be used for a range of direct program costs, such as personnel, equipment, travel, and other operating expenses that support educational activities. Indirect costs, as well as expenses unrelated to education (e.g., construction not tied to training, bonuses, food), are strictly ineligible. The NVHA encourages applicants to fully leverage available Medicare slots and to coordinate with the state to pursue Medicaid reimbursement strategies that can enhance sustainability and future funding sources. No cost share or matching funds are required for this opportunity. The grant application must include a coversheet, project abstract, budget narrative with a feasibility analysis, project narrative, and signed letters of commitment from all partners. Applications must be submitted electronically by April 24, 2026, at 11:59 PM PT. Incomplete or late submissions will not be considered. Proposals are reviewed for completeness and then scored competitively by the GME Advisory Council based on criteria including budget, work plan, evaluation strategy, and alignment with state priorities. Award announcements are expected by June 30, 2026. Projects must begin within 30 days of award notice unless a written exception is granted. Awardees will have four years to spend funds as stipulated in the grant agreement. Quarterly and annual reporting is required throughout the 10-year grant reporting period, with a final evaluation due 30 days after the conclusion. Reporting must include performance measures, fiscal tracking, and evidence of continued program operation and sustainability beyond the life of the grant. Questions and final submissions should be directed to the GME Program Manager, Dorian Mastros, at [email protected] or by phone at (702) 668-4205. Applicants are encouraged to visit the official GME webpage regularly for updates.
