Solid Waste Recycling Grant

The 2026 Barton County Solid Waste Recycling Grant is a locally administered funding opportunity initiated by the Barton County Commissioners to encourage and support recycling initiatives that enhance environmental and economic outcomes for residents and institutions within Barton County, Kansas. As part of its annual solid waste operations, Barton County allocated a total of $15,000 to stimulate innovation and community engagement in sustainable waste management practices, particularly those aligned with the Barton County Solid Waste Management Plan. Eligible applicants include any department, agency, organization, recycling center, city, school district, or community college that operates within the boundaries of Barton County. The grant is specifically designed to expand recycling capacity, increase public participation in recycling, and generate environmental benefits that serve the broader public interest. All proposals should demonstrate alignment with the county’s recycling goals and detail how the project will serve local residents, businesses, or industry. Funding may be awarded in full or in part, based on the total number and types of applications received. Applicants may request up to the total available amount ($15,000), but smaller project applications are also encouraged. Allowable costs include expenses directly related to enhancing or initiating recycling programs, such as the purchase or repair of recycling equipment, development of educational or awareness campaigns, site improvements, and tools or supplies needed for project implementation. Projects aimed at expanding recyclable material types or their applications, as well as those promoting recycling through advertising or education, are also eligible. Costs deemed unallowable include land acquisition, salaries or benefits, and projects involving hazardous waste recycling. The program is designed to supplement, not replace, existing funding streams. Any grant recipient will be required to submit a detailed funding report to the Barton County Commission, outlining how the funds were utilized and what outcomes were achieved. Applications must be submitted in writing and delivered in a sealed envelope marked “Recycling Grant Application” to the Barton County Clerk’s Office, located at 1400 Main Street, Suite 202, Great Bend, Kansas. The submission deadline is 2:00 p.m. on April 28, 2026. While no specific application format is required, applicants must clearly state the amount requested, the allowable costs covered, and how their proposal adheres to the grant requirements.
