Grant Description

The WFP Innovation Challenge, led by the World Food Programme’s Innovation Accelerator, is a global initiative seeking breakthrough solutions to address acute food insecurity. As the humanitarian landscape becomes increasingly complex due to conflict, climate shocks, and economic disruptions, WFP is pursuing innovative ideas that can deliver sustainable food security and humanitarian impact. The program is open to both startups and internal WFP teams, offering a unique blend of funding, mentorship, and integration opportunities within WFP's global operations. This challenge supports early-stage ventures and WFP employee-led innovations through a six-month Sprint program. Selected projects receive up to $100,000 in equity-free funding, individualized mentoring, strategic collaboration with WFP country offices and business units, and visibility through WFP’s channels. Participants benefit from the support of dedicated innovation consultants and gain access to WFP’s extensive field network to pilot and scale innovations in challenging environments. For external applicants, eligibility requires having an established legal entity (either for-profit or nonprofit) and an innovation that has reached at least the Minimum Viable Product stage, preferably with some initial traction. The innovation must demonstrate potential for scale, relevance to WFP operations, and a clear implementation strategy within the Sprint timeframe. Applicants must also show willingness to operate in any of the 123 countries and territories where WFP works. WFP employees are also encouraged to apply, provided they have management support and backing from their respective country offices. The challenge is inclusive across contract types and functional areas within the organization. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, with topic-specific cohorts announced periodically. Submissions are evaluated by internal and external experts against standardized criteria including impact potential, feasibility, innovation level, financial sustainability, and team capacity. High priority is given to projects co-designed with affected communities and those with demonstrated initial market validation. The challenge aims to identify and scale interventions capable of significantly contributing to WFP’s mission of ending hunger globally. The application process is straightforward, requiring submission through WFP's Accelerator platform. There are no stated pre-application requirements, and selected projects proceed directly to the Sprint phase. Although the program operates on a rolling basis, it is issued regularly and can be expected to recur. Additional information and FAQs are available on the WFP Innovation Accelerator website.
