Grant Description

The AIM-AHEAD Bridge2AI AI-READI Training Program, Cohort 2, is a collaboration between the AIM-AHEAD initiative and the Bridge2AI program funded by the NIH Common Fund. This intensive 8-month traineeship is designed to expand access to the Artificial Intelligence Ready and Exploratory Atlas for Diabetes Insights (AI-READI) dataset while strengthening skills in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) for health data science. Through a train-the-trainer approach, the program equips selected participants to conduct innovative research that leverages AI/ML methodologies to address preventable health disparities, particularly those related to type 2 diabetes mellitus. Eligible participants include graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, early-career faculty, and professionals from a broad range of academic and non-academic institutions. All applicants must be U.S. Citizens, Permanent Residents, or Non-Citizen U.S. Nationals and affiliated with a U.S.-based organization. Applicants must also have at least a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as data science, public health, engineering, or biological sciences. Prior experience in programming and statistics is required, and the program is conducted entirely in English. The program period runs from November 17, 2025, through July 2026. Applications must be submitted by September 26, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. ET. Selected trainees will be notified by November 10, 2025. Application materials include a personal statement, NIH biosketch or CV, academic transcripts, and at least two signed letters of support, including one from a supervisor confirming protected time for program participation. Applications must be submitted through the InfoReady portal after registering on the AIM-AHEAD Connect platform. Trainees will participate in virtual training modules, workshops, and mentoring sessions focused on using the AI-READI dataset and developing rigorous, ethically sound research projects. The curriculum includes training in biomedical concepts, human subjects protection, social responsibility, and foundational AI/ML methods, along with practical instruction in using tools like R, Python, and Jupyter notebooks. Participants will learn to navigate the Fairhub.io platform and will work on projects using data domains such as EHRs, imaging, and environmental sensors. Each trainee will receive a total stipend of $8,000 distributed in installments upon milestone completion. Additionally, two separate $2,000 travel allowances are provided to attend the 2026 AIM-AHEAD Annual Meeting and the Bridge2AI Face-to-Face Conference. Mentorship and support will be provided through the AIM-AHEAD Connect platform, with dedicated helpdesk and concierge services available to assist trainees. Program expectations include a time commitment of 5–8 hours per week, submission of a research proposal on Fairhub, and participation in peer networking. Trainees are required to present a poster at the 2026 Bridge2AI and AIM-AHEAD conferences and are encouraged to submit abstracts or manuscripts for professional dissemination. The program will also gather feedback to improve future use of the AI-READI dataset and integrate it with other NIH data resources. This opportunity reflects AIM-AHEAD and Bridge2AI’s shared commitment to building a diverse, skilled AI/ML research community and to addressing health inequities through data-driven research. The AIM-AHEAD North Stars—broad workforce participation, community empowerment, health outcome improvement, and local capacity building—serve as the foundational values of this training initiative.
