Sports Event Funding Program
This program provides financial support to major sporting events in Allegheny County that can boost the local economy and attract visitors, covering costs like marketing, venue rentals, and production expenses.
The Sports Event Grants (SEG) Program is a funding initiative of the Sports & Exhibition Authority of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County (SEA), aimed at supporting significant sporting events that bolster the local economy and enhance the visibility of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County as premier event destinations. Established through the SEA Sports Commission, SEG provides both grants and loans to eligible events, with a goal of elevating Pittsburgh's profile in the national and international sports landscape. The SEA operates this program to generate tangible economic returns by backing events that attract visitors and provide high-quality sports entertainment. Eligible events under this program are classified as Major Sporting Events or related conferences. These must be sanctioned by a recognized regional, national, or international organization and held at notable venues in Allegheny County such as Acrisure Stadium, PNC Park, PPG Paints Arena, or the Convention Center. Examples include professional or amateur athletic competitions and esports tournaments. Events must demonstrate significant economic impact, including hotel stays and local expenditures, and must be scheduled at least 60 days after the application deadline and occur within two years of the application date. The SEG Program offers financial assistance of up to $75,000 per event, disbursed on a reimbursement basis upon completion and submission of a final report. In special cases where events present a high economic return, the SEA Board may approve higher funding levels. Eligible uses of funds include vendor payments, advertising, marketing, venue and equipment rentals, production costs, and officiant fees. However, certain costs are explicitly ineligible, such as travel, lobbying, solicitation, meals (except for event participants), awards dinners, alcoholic beverages, salaries, and overhead expenses. Applicants must be either SportsPITTSBURGH or an established legal entity that has existed for at least two years. The application process requires comprehensive event details including budget, economic impact projections, promotional plans, and past performance if applicable. Applications are reviewed by the SEA Sports Commission, which evaluates proposals based on type of organization, projected economic benefits, strategic alignment with regional goals, demonstrated need, event quality, potential for growth, and commitment to diversity and sustainability. Applications are accepted twice per year, typically around January 15 and July 15. The current cycle closes on January 15, 2026. There is no pre-application requirement such as letters of intent or concept papers. The review process involves financial and strategic evaluation, with final funding decisions made by the SEA Board. Upon approval, a funding agreement is executed, detailing compliance requirements, allowable costs, insurance needs, and close-out reporting expectations. If SEG funding exceeds $75,000, the event must also submit a program audit conducted by an independent auditor. Inquiries and support for the application process are directed to the official SEG email, [email protected]. Applications are submitted via the grant portal at www.sportseventgrants.com. Applicants should ensure that events meet the eligibility timeline and compliance conditions, including organizational standing, financial integrity, and absence of any defaults or legal issues. This recurring program is a critical mechanism for reinforcing Pittsburghโs position as a thriving sports destination while promoting economic vitality through event tourism.
