Aaron Thomas Gelineau Fund for Educational Opportunity in Minnesota
This grant provides financial support to nonprofit organizations in Duluth, Minnesota, to help underserved youth and families achieve educational success and overcome barriers to learning.
The Aaron Thomas Gelineau Fund for Educational Opportunity is a grant program offered through the Boreal Waters Community Foundation to support the academic and personal development of underserved youth and families in Duluth, Minnesota. The fund is named in honor of Aaron Thomas Gelineau and aims to reduce opportunity gaps by investing in educational success from cradle to career. The fund supports nonprofits that help young people and families reach key educational milestones and overcome barriers that impede their progress. The fund prioritizes programs that enable traditionally underserved individuals to complete high school or obtain a GED. Organizations with a proven track record of directly impacting youth, young adults, and families are especially encouraged to apply. Funding is intended to support initiatives that promote long-term educational success, career readiness, and wellness for both youth and their families. In addition to supporting formal educational goals, grants from the Aaron Thomas Gelineau Fund may be used to address basic needs that directly affect a studentโs ability to participate in or complete their education. This may include practical supports such as transportation, school supplies, internet access, computer equipment, temporary childcare, and emergency expenses. These resources are intended to remove everyday barriers that disproportionately affect underserved populations. Examples of previously funded project types include GED completion programs, after-school or summer education programs, wellness and school success initiatives, career education or preparation programs, and mentorship initiatives with an educational focus. Each funded project is expected to demonstrate a strong community impact and directly serve individuals in Duluth, MN. Eligibility is limited to nonprofit organizations that provide services to residents of Duluth. Applicants must also meet IRS classification requirements as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Section 170(c)(1) public entity, Section 7871 tribal government, church, or be sponsored by a qualifying fiscal sponsor. The project must take place within the city limits of Duluth. The Fall 2025 grant cycle opens on August 12 and closes on September 15. An optional Zoom information session will be held on August 12. Applications will be reviewed from September 24 through October 27. Award announcements will be made on November 19, and funding will be disbursed by November 26.
