Granby Greater Together Community Fund
This initiative provides funding to individuals and organizations in Granby, Connecticut, to empower the community in addressing local needs through collaborative projects that promote civic engagement and inclusivity.
The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, a long-standing philanthropic organization serving the Greater Hartford region, established the Greater Together Community Funds (GTCF) as part of its mission to deepen local engagement and empower residents to identify and address the specific needs within their towns. Each participating town receives a dedicated fund of $100,000, composed of $50,000 in endowed funds and $50,000 in “immediate use” funds, with opportunities for additional community fundraising and future growth. The fund is rooted in the belief that community members possess the most direct understanding of the challenges and opportunities in their area, but often face limitations in resources to act upon them. The initiative is structured to enhance inclusive civic participation and foster collaborative problem-solving at the grassroots level. The GTCF program in Granby, Connecticut, is led by a resident advisory committee responsible for identifying local priorities and managing the grantmaking process. This committee initiated its 2025 cycle by engaging in community listening sessions to gather feedback and insight from town residents. These engagements emphasized a shared vision for Granby that includes enhanced support for vulnerable populations, youth enrichment, arts initiatives, and environmental stewardship. Following a robust outreach and proposal collection process, the Granby committee received 33 applications totaling nearly $500,000 in funding requests. In response to these needs and through a competitive review process, the committee awarded approximately $104,000 in grants to 12 diverse organizations. These grants reflect the town’s multifaceted priorities and include initiatives such as a student backpack program by Gifts of Love, expanded food delivery logistics via the Open Cupboard at Granby Congregational Church, youth athletic support through Special Olympics Connecticut, crisis financial aid programs in collaboration with Granby Public Schools and United Way, and enhancements to arts and historical resources led by the Granby Fine Arts Booster and Salmon Brook Historical Society. Additional grantees include the Granby Land Trust and Friends of Granby Wildflower Meadow for environmental education and trail improvements, a kitchen renovation project for community use by the Shannon-Shattuck American Legion Post, and emergency preparedness efforts through Granby Homes for Senior Citizens and the Town Fire Marshal. Lastly, Citizens for a Better Granby received support to increase the efficiency of volunteer coordination. These funded initiatives are expected to bring tangible benefits to Granby residents across age groups and sectors. The GTCF does not accept applications from individuals or for-profit companies. Eligible applicants include registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations and, in some cases, municipalities. The Foundation offers guidance and support to towns in establishing and managing their advisory committees and grant processes, with the goal of ensuring broad representation and inclusivity in decision-making. Each town’s committee determines its own specific grant cycles and application procedures. Looking ahead, the GTCF in Granby is preparing for a new grantmaking cycle in 2026. The committee welcomes ideas, feedback, and expressions of interest from residents who wish to participate in shaping the future of Granby’s community investments. Those interested in collaborating or serving on the committee are encouraged to reach out directly. The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving remains committed to this localized, participatory funding model and will continue to support town-level efforts that drive meaningful, resident-led change.
