The Initiative Foundation offers Economic Development and Workforce Grants aimed at supporting local units of government, Tribal governments, and economic development-focused nonprofit organizations with 501(c)(3) status. The foundation emphasizes its commitment to empowering communities throughout Central Minnesota by fostering economic growth, vibrant communities, and a culture of generosity. These grants target early-stage or pilot projects and new strategic initiatives that promote workforce housing and regional workforce attraction and retention.
The grant program specifically funds projects that forge new partnerships supporting sector-specific apprenticeships, internships, or mentoring programs. It also supports initiatives that aim to build workforce housing, encourage entrepreneurial activity, and incentivize business growth providing family-sustaining wages. Additionally, the program funds feasibility analyses and assessments of preliminary designs or business models that can lead to stronger economic outcomes.
However, the foundation clearly outlines activities it does not fund. These include general marketing or billboard campaigns, single-company or organization-centered projects, human resource costs such as onboarding or training, and other routine operational expenses. This focused funding approach ensures resources are directed toward initiatives with broad regional impact and innovation.
Eligible applicants are reminded that they may receive only one grant from this program per calendar year. The maximum award available per project is $10,000. Two deadlines are established annually for submission: May 9 and November 14. The program is not offered on a rolling basis, and applicants should plan accordingly.
Applicants can seek assistance from the Initiative Foundation staff, who are available during working hours Monday through Friday, with specific support roles filled by Jessy Beto (Grantmaking Administrator), Nicole Clements (Nonprofit Development Program Officer), and Amy Trombley (Vice President for Community). Inquiries can be directed to their respective emails or through the main contact line at the Little Falls or St. Cloud offices.
Applications can be submitted through the foundationโs portal. Questions or requests for support can be directed to the general grants email or directly to the designated staff contacts. The foundation encourages open communication and support throughout the application process.
