Community Waste Reduction Grant
This funding opportunity supports local governments and nonprofit organizations in Central Ohio to implement projects that reduce waste and promote recycling, composting, and material reuse within their communities.
The Community Waste Reduction Grant (CWRG), administered by the Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio (SWACO), is a competitive funding opportunity designed to address the unique waste management challenges of Central Ohio. SWACO, headquartered in Grove City, Ohio, is committed to reducing reliance on landfills by promoting practices such as recycling, composting, and reuse. Through the CWRG, the agency encourages the development and implementation of local waste diversion strategies that are sustainable and community-focused. This grant program targets public and nonprofit organizations operating within SWACO's jurisdiction, including cities, villages, townships, parks, K-12 schools, colleges, universities, hospitals, and faith-based entities. Its aim is to support initiatives that divert materials from the Franklin County Sanitary Landfill through infrastructure development, public education, outreach, and enhanced recycling or composting programs. Applicants are expected to propose projects that not only fulfill local waste diversion goals but also foster community collaboration and long-term sustainability. Emphasis is placed on projects that integrate education and outreach as key components to ensure community engagement and behavioral change. CWRG does not support private-sector business activities, directing such entities to other SWACO business-focused resources. All proposed projects must be located within SWACO’s Central Ohio jurisdiction. Eligible uses of grant funds include the establishment, improvement, or expansion of systems for reducing, reusing, recycling, composting, or redistributing excess food. Projects are required to be measurable in terms of environmental impact and demonstrate a clear method for quantifying the volume of waste reduced or diverted. Grants range from $500 to $35,000, with recipients required to contribute a minimum of 20% of the total project cost as a cash match. SWACO allows for half of the grant funds to be distributed upfront, with the remaining portion reimbursed upon approval of a final report. This report must document the project's outcomes, challenges, and overall impact on waste diversion. Grant recipients must complete all activities by December 31, 2027. No project expenses may be incurred before the execution of a grant agreement. The application process strongly encourages early engagement with SWACO staff to ensure project alignment and maximize effectiveness. The current grant cycle is closed, with the next cycle anticipated to open in May 2026. As the program is recurring, interested applicants are advised to begin preparation early. While no formal pre-application materials are required, SWACO encourages prospective applicants to contact the Program Administrator for technical assistance and guidance in developing compliant proposals. The agency also offers webinars and showcases past successful grantees to help new applicants better understand program expectations. For further assistance or to discuss project ideas, applicants should contact Kristi Higginbotham, Programs Administrator, via email at [email protected] or by phone at 614-871-5100. Updates on future grant opportunities can be received by subscribing to SWACO’s newsletter. Although the current application window is closed, applicants are encouraged to check the website again in May 2026 for updated information regarding the next grant cycle.
