David Storrs Match Racing Grant
This grant provides financial and mentorship support to emerging U.S. match racers aged 22 to 29, helping them participate in competitive sailing events and develop their skills in the sport.
The 2026 David Storrs Match Racing Grant is a competitive sailing grant administered by US Sailing, established in honor of the late David Storrs, a highly accomplished American match racer who achieved international recognition for his success and mentorship in the sport. Through a generous legacy gift left by Storrs, the US Sailing Match Racing Committee created this program to support emerging U.S. match racers with both financial and developmental assistance. The grant aims to continue Storrs’ legacy of excellence by investing in the next generation of competitive match racers and fostering a culture of mentorship and high-level performance. The program offers up to $5,000 in reimbursable expenses per selected team for one calendar year, covering essential costs such as travel, lodging, and entry fees to support participation in match racing events. In addition to financial support, recipients are matched with experienced match racing mentors who provide strategic guidance, logistical advice, and campaign planning support throughout the season. This dual support model is designed to ensure athletes not only gain competitive exposure but also learn from experienced professionals within the sport. Applicants for the 2026 cycle must be between 22 and 29 years old before January 1, 2026, and possess prior match racing experience. The program prioritizes sailors who are committed to growing within the discipline and continuing their participation long term. Each grant cycle selects one male and one female skipper, and while applicants are encouraged to apply with a team in mind, it is not a requirement. Selected teams must participate in at least one match racing clinic and three graded events, including one U.S. Match Racing Championship Qualifier. Additional events are encouraged, with preference given to those held in the United States. The application requires a detailed submission, including a sailing resume, team information, letters of recommendation, an event schedule with grading levels, a detailed campaign budget, and a personal statement. All materials must be submitted as a single PDF through the application form hosted on US Sailing’s Jotform platform. The selection committee will evaluate applicants on several criteria including demonstrated interest in match racing, sailing accomplishments, quality of the proposed event schedule, financial need, and alignment with the program's goals. Applications opened on January 15, 2026, and will close on April 1, 2026. Reference checks and interviews, if needed, will take place from April 1 to April 15, with final award announcements expected by April 15. Reimbursable expenses must be incurred between April 15, 2026, and April 15, 2027. Recipients are advised to retain all receipts and submit reimbursement requests for amounts of $1,000 or more. Expenses must fall within eligible categories, with food, gear, and damage costs excluded. By participating in the David Storrs Match Racing Grant Program, sailors gain access to a year of structured development and competition, all while honoring the legacy of a sailor who dedicated his life to advancing the sport. Through continued financial contributions, the program seeks to sustain its mission and remain a vital stepping stone for the next generation of U.S. match racing talent.
