Dr. Seuss Foundation Bright Futures Grant
This grant provides funding to nonprofit organizations in San Diego County to enhance early childhood literacy and learning programs for children aged 0 to 8, particularly those from underserved communities.
The Ready to Learn grant program, administered jointly by the Dr. Seuss Foundation and San Diego Foundation, is a philanthropic initiative supporting early childhood literacy and learning in San Diego County. Since 2022, this partnership has awarded nearly $5 million to local organizations, impacting over 70,000 individuals, including 37,000 children aged 0–5. The initiative reflects a shared commitment to early learning and child development, providing long-term support via a $15 million endowment from the Dr. Seuss Foundation. In 2025, the Ready to Learn initiative was formally launched to create sustainable infrastructure for early literacy, focusing on children up to age five. In 2026, this effort expands through a Common Application that also includes the Bright Futures initiative, which targets children up to age eight. This streamlined process allows organizations to apply for one or both funding streams using a unified application. Applicants may indicate if they are experiencing funding losses and how grant funding would support impacted operations. Initial applications do not require a budget, but may be asked during the review phase. The combined review process is conducted by both foundations to determine the most appropriate funding opportunity. The Ready to Learn initiative in 2026 will allocate $1 million in funding. Nonprofit organizations can request up to $60,000 each to support early literacy for children aged 0–5. Four key objectives guide program eligibility: expanding access to high-quality literacy programs; enhancing provider expertise in literacy instruction; promoting family-centered literacy and learning; and addressing barriers to learning with whole-child, developmentally appropriate approaches. Programs must operate in San Diego County and serve young children, their caretakers, or early childhood educators. Bright Futures, also funded at $1 million for 2026, targets a slightly broader age range, supporting children up to age eight. This program emphasizes school readiness, experiential learning, and social-emotional development. Eligible programs must address early education, literacy, social-emotional wellness, playful learning through arts or nature, or seamless PK–3rd grade transitions. Funding requests under Bright Futures are also capped at $60,000 and evaluated on objectives such as network strengthening, collaboration across systems, and capacity building. To apply, eligible 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations serving San Diego County must submit applications via the San Diego Foundation’s online portal. Applications open on January 20, 2026, and are due by 5:00 p.m. PDT on February 20, 2026. Fiscal sponsorships are permitted if the sponsor can demonstrate a cooperative relationship and is willing to manage the grant. Projects should span one year, though multi-year support may be considered based on available funds and organizational capacity. Award notifications are anticipated in April 2026. Applicants will need to describe how their programs align with listed objectives, support underserved communities, and utilize grant funds for essential operational costs. Projects that support children facing developmental challenges or residing in low-to-moderate income communities are especially encouraged. The foundations will not fund debt reduction, endowments, scholarships, or religious/political programming. Questions about the grant or technical issues with the portal must be submitted through a designated inquiry form on the foundation’s website.
