Arts Big Read Program
This grant provides funding to nonprofit organizations and community groups in the U.S. to create engaging reading programs centered around selected books that explore the connection between people and the environment, fostering community dialogue and creativity.
The NEA Big Read, a program administered by Arts Midwest in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts, offers grant funding to support community-wide reading programs focused on a single book from the NEA Big Read library. The program encourages community engagement through literature, inspiring dialogues, celebrating local creativity, and highlighting diverse voices and cultural heritage. The 2026–2027 grant cycle aligns with the national AMERICA250 theme, commemorating the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. A total of $1,090,000 in federal funding will be distributed as project grants to approximately 75 organizations across the United States, with awards ranging from $5,000 to $20,000. Grants may be used to fund book purchases and programming costs, with flexibility in event formats and durations. Events might span from a week to several months and include book discussions, public readings, author talks, panel discussions, performances, and creative activities inspired by selected texts. Applicants are encouraged to be imaginative and inclusive, ensuring accessibility for participants of all backgrounds and abilities. Each proposed project must select a book from the current NEA Big Read library, and programming should explore the book’s themes in relation to the local community and the overarching AMERICA250 focus. To be eligible, applicants must be 501(c)(3) nonprofits or other federally tax-exempt entities, such as public libraries, tribal organizations, universities, and arts or community service organizations. Organizations must be based in the U.S., U.S. territories, or Native Nations and must have a UEI number by late April 2026. Fiscal sponsors, for-profit businesses, elementary or secondary schools, and individual artists or agents are ineligible. Projects must take place between September 1, 2026, and June 30, 2027, and include specific required elements: a public kick-off event, a commemorative event honoring America’s artistic and cultural heritage, at least three book discussions, a presentation inspired by the book, and an artistic project or activity. Grantees must also work with at least two community partners: a library (unless the applicant is a library) and one additional organization that broadens community participation. Applications are submitted in two stages: an Intent to Apply due by January 15, 2026, followed by the full application due by January 29, 2026. Applications are reviewed by a panel of literary and community experts based on criteria including artistic merit, audience engagement, resource management, and alignment with NEA Big Read goals. Award notifications will be sent in April 2026, with selected grantees announced in June 2026 and programming beginning in September 2026. Grantees are required to submit preliminary and final reports detailing program activities, impact, and expenditures.
