Grant Description

The RiverSmart Communities Grant Program is a collaborative initiative between the District of Columbia’s Department of Energy and Environment (DOEE) and the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay. This program aims to advance community-based environmental efforts by supporting the installation of green infrastructure projects throughout the District. By promoting sustainable practices and improving water quality, the initiative contributes to the health of local waterways and the Chesapeake Bay. The RiverSmart Communities grant specifically targets projects that incorporate stormwater best management practices (BMPs) while simultaneously engaging and educating the community. Unlike previous iterations of this program that prioritized stormwater management alone, the current version places a greater emphasis on public outreach and long-term stewardship. Eligible projects may include the installation of rain gardens, shade trees, permeable pavements, cisterns that drain to other BMPs, stormwater planters, swales, and the removal of impervious surfaces. The selected practices must not be part of any mandated stormwater regulation compliance. Eligibility for this funding opportunity is limited to 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations and houses of worship operating within the District. Applicants must demonstrate a clear plan for community engagement and a long-term commitment to maintaining the installed green infrastructure. Successful projects are those that not only address environmental concerns but also foster local involvement and education around water pollution and conservation. The application period is open on a rolling basis from June through December 2025. Interested applicants can seek support during office hours, which are available Monday through Friday during regular business hours. Quarterly awards and kickoff meetings are scheduled for August and December, allowing selected organizations to begin their projects in alignment with these cycles. To apply, organizations must submit a proposal detailing both their stormwater management strategy and their outreach efforts. Evaluation will consider the environmental impact, community involvement, and sustainability of the proposed activities. For further information or application guidance, prospective applicants can contact Jordan Gochenaur at [email protected] or DOEE directly at [email protected].
