APSA Advancing Research Grants for Indigenous Politics
This grant provides funding to support research on Indigenous politics and related fields, prioritizing projects by scholars and practitioners, especially those from American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian communities.
The American Political Science Association (APSA), a leading scholarly association dedicated to advancing the study and practice of political science, offers the APSA Advancing Research Grants for Indigenous Politics to support research that contributes to the field of Indigenous politics. This initiative is part of APSA's broader Diversity and Inclusion Programs, aimed at increasing representation and engagement among historically underrepresented communities within the discipline. The grant program targets research centered on Indigenous Politics and related disciplines, specifically prioritizing work in Indigenous Studies, Indigenous Political Science, Sovereignty, Tribal Governance, and Native Studies. Applicants are encouraged to use diverse research methodologies, including qualitative, quantitative, interpretive, mixed methods, political philosophy, and theoretical approaches. Collaboratively-authored projects are also eligible and welcomed, with funds disbursed to the designated primary investigator. Funding amounts for this cycle will range from $2,000 to $2,500. These funds may be applied toward a variety of research-related expenses such as access to data or archives, compensation for undergraduate or graduate research assistants, purchase of statistical software, manuscript preparation, travel for fieldwork or site visits, and professional development activities like training in research methods. However, indirect costs, fringe benefits, rent, or overhead expenses are not eligible for coverage. Clarification regarding allowable expenses can be obtained by contacting the APSA Diversity and Inclusion Programs team via the provided email address. Eligibility is extended to political science and Indigenous Politics scholars, faculty, students, and practitioners whose research actively centers on Indigenous topics or theories. APSA especially encourages applications from American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian individuals. Applicants who presented relevant work at the 2025 APSA Annual Meeting are particularly encouraged to apply. Funded projects must be completed by December 31, 2026. To apply, interested individuals must create an APSA profile and submit their materials through the designated online application system. Required materials include a 250-word abstract describing the research or professional development need, a 500 to 1000-word narrative explaining how the grant will support the project, an itemized budget, and a curriculum vitae or resume. Only submissions through the online system will be reviewed by the selection committee. Applications are currently open, with a submission deadline of November 2, 2025. Based on APSA's history of annual grant cycles, it is likely that a future cycle will open around the same time in 2026. All questions regarding the application or grant program should be directed to diversityprograms@apsanet.org.
