Olam’s Piggybank Grant Program
This program provides financial support to families and individuals affected by disorders of the corpus callosum for purchasing assistive devices and technologies that improve their daily lives.
Olam’s Piggybank Grant Program, administered by the National Organization for Disorders of the Corpus Callosum (NODCC), provides critical financial support to individuals and families affected by disorders of the corpus callosum. Thanks to a generous grant from The Swan Foundation, this program enables recipients to acquire assistive devices and technologies that significantly enhance quality of life. Grants are awarded bi-annually, through a competitive and anonymous application process designed to ensure fairness and equitable distribution of funds. The program defines “assistive devices and technologies” broadly, encompassing tools that aid with communication, mobility, education, vision, and hearing. Examples include walkers, wheelchairs, adaptive feeding tools, communication apps, and other technology that directly supports daily living and personal development. However, the program excludes services such as therapy, service animals and related accessories, and general-use electronics like laptops or tablets unless their functionality is locked to a single approved application. Final eligibility of specific items is determined by NODCC. Each semi-annual grant cycle allocates a total of $2,500. Individual awards typically range from $200 to $1,000, with final amounts determined based on application volume and demonstrated need. Applications are reviewed anonymously by a special committee, and decisions are final once awards are made. The program does not offer multi-year funding or support for endowments, ensuring that limited resources are directed toward immediate, high-impact needs. Applications are accepted twice annually. The winter cycle opens October 1 and closes October 31, with award notifications sent by December 1. The summer cycle runs from May 1 through May 31, with award decisions communicated by July 1 or during the NODCC Biennial Conference. Applications must be complete to be considered, and incomplete submissions are disqualified from review. Applicants are encouraged to reach out with questions to ensure proper completion of forms. Eligibility is limited to individuals and families impacted by callosal disorders residing within the United States. While there is no formal income threshold, the committee gives strong consideration to lower-income applicants to maximize the impact of funding. Applicants are required to submit a completed application form detailing the requested device, household circumstances, and potential benefit to the recipient’s quality of life. This program provides a targeted, impactful opportunity to support the unique needs of individuals with rare neurological conditions.
