Grant Description

The Society of Family Planning’s Changemakers in Family Planning grant for 2025 is designed to directly address institutionalized racism in the field of reproductive health research by providing targeted support to scholars of color. The program seeks to foster a diverse and inclusive research community by investing in the professional growth and leadership of early-career scholars of color who are committed to advancing the science of abortion and contraception. This 18-month award does not fund original research but instead provides protected time and resources for career development activities, research skill-building, networking, and mentorship. The total award includes up to $60,000 in salary support, with optional indirect costs capped at 20% of the salary request. Additionally, up to $10,000 is provided for professional development opportunities such as training and travel, and $6,000 for mentorship contracts—$3,000 each for a scholar-selected and a Society-matched mentor. Grantees also receive a two-year complimentary Society membership (2025–2027), travel and registration for the 2025 and 2026 Society Annual Meetings, and access to a cohort network and exclusive grantee events. Up to eight scholars will be selected for this competitive opportunity. Eligible applicants must self-identify as a person of color, be within ten years of completing a terminal degree, not have served as a PI on a major family planning project ($250,000+), and be residing in the U.S. (including territories). Applicants in active clinical training (e.g., residency, postdoc, fellowship) are not eligible. Applicants must submit via an institutional sponsor that holds tax-exempt status. The application period opened January 17, 2025, and closes May 20, 2025. Awards will begin on September 1, 2025, and end March 1, 2027. The selection process emphasizes the applicant’s commitment to family planning, the potential impact of the award on their career, and alignment with the Society’s vision of equitable abortion and contraception informed by science. Applicants must submit an online form, a personal and research summary, a research statement, a career development plan, mentorship needs, a CV, a guaranteed protection of time form, and a letter of recommendation. Submissions must be uploaded as a single PDF to the Society’s online portal. Questions can be directed to Grants@SocietyFP.org.
