Dayton Foundation Discretionary Grant

The Dayton Foundation offers discretionary grants to 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations operating in the Greater Dayton region, including Montgomery, Miami, Greene, Darke, Preble, and northern Warren counties in Ohio. These grants support a broad array of causes including social services, arts, health, and the environment. The program primarily focuses on launching new initiatives or providing targeted support for special efforts that are not currently addressed by existing organizations. Eligible applicants must be tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3), have a minimum of two years of operational history, demonstrate sustainability, and actively serve residents within the eligible counties. Additionally, applicants must show a commitment to equity and access in their practices and have submitted a final report if they received a previous discretionary or Greenlight Grant. Applications must address unmet needs and promote systemic collaboration in the community. Grants awarded typically range from $7,501 to $75,000 but may not exceed 25 percent of the total cost for projects under $300,000. The size and number of awards vary by cycle and depend on donor fund availability and restrictions. Priority is given to proposals that enhance resource efficiency, encourage inter-organizational cooperation, test innovative solutions, or strengthen nonprofit operations. Projects that promote community involvement and reduce duplication of services are favored. Discretionary grants do not support operational deficits, individual benefits, religious causes, or academic research, among other exclusions. Newly formed organizations with less than two years of 501(c)(3) status are also ineligible. Additionally, multi-year or large-dollar proposals are rarely approved unless specifically sanctioned by the Foundation’s governing bodies. Applicants must apply through the Foundation's new grant portal, which provides a downloadable worksheet and pre-recorded orientation video. Submission deadlines for 2025 include January 3, July 7, and October 3, all due by 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time. The Foundation expects a final grant report for previously awarded funds and encourages direct contact with the Senior Community Engagement Officer for further guidance.
