Collaborations in Artificial Intelligence and Geosciences
This program provides funding for collaborative projects that combine artificial intelligence and geoscience research to tackle important Earth system challenges.
The Collaborations in Artificial Intelligence and Geosciences (CAIG) program, administered by the National Science Foundation (NSF) under funding opportunity number 25-530, seeks to advance scientific understanding of the Earth system through innovative artificial intelligence (AI) methods. This program supports collaborative projects that address key geoscience research questions while simultaneously advancing AI techniques. The core objective is to foster interdisciplinary partnerships between AI experts and geoscientists, enabling significant breakthroughs in both fields. The CAIG program emphasizes the integration of sophisticated or novel AI methods with geoscience research to address complex problems related to Earth systems. Projects funded under this initiative must demonstrate the potential to answer critical geoscience questions while also contributing to the development or refinement of AI methodologies. Successful proposals will highlight innovative approaches and collaborative efforts that leverage expertise from both domains. The total estimated funding for this program is $10,000,000, with approximately nine awards anticipated. There is no specified award ceiling or floor, and cost-sharing or matching funds are not required. Proposals must align with the overarching goals of advancing geoscience research and improving AI techniques through integrative partnerships. Eligible applicants include non-profit, non-academic organizations such as independent museums, observatories, research laboratories, and professional societies. Institutions of higher education, including two- and four-year accredited institutions located in the United States, are also eligible to apply. Proposals involving international branches of U.S. higher education institutions must justify the necessity of performing project activities at international locations rather than U.S.-based campuses. Federally recognized Tribal Nations, as well as other federal agencies and Federally Funded Research and Development Centers (FFRDCs), are also eligible, subject to specific NSF guidelines. The application deadline is April 2, 2025. Applicants are encouraged to thoroughly review the detailed program guidelines provided in NSF Publication 25-530 for specific instructions on preparing and submitting proposals. Applications must be submitted electronically through Grants.gov, and technical assistance is available through grantsgovsupport@nsf.gov. This program represents an opportunity for interdisciplinary research teams to contribute to significant advancements in geoscience knowledge while pushing the boundaries of AI methodologies.
