Grant Description

The City of Glendale’s Library, Arts & Culture Department (LAC) in collaboration with the Community Services & Parks (CSP) and the Arts and Culture Commission is offering an opportunity for artists, art organizations, and schools to temporarily exhibit art at the Adams Square Mini Park Gas Station (ASMPGS). This initiative is part of a broader goal to enhance the cultural vibrancy of Glendale by increasing access to and participation in public art, particularly for local and regional artists. The ASMPGS is a glass cube structure located in a public park, offering artists a unique venue to present visually engaging and site-specific installations. All submitted works must be tailored to this distinct venue and designed to be visible and interesting from all four sides of the glass cube. Acceptable media include a wide range of visual and installation art such as photography, painting, sculpture, stained glass, mosaics, mixed media, and digital works, intended for public and community enrichment. The opportunity is open to local and regional artists, including schools and arts organizations. While the call is not restricted to Glendale residents, preference may be given to local applicants when other criteria are equally met. Employees of the City of Glendale are ineligible. Artworks must not include copyrighted logos, brand names, or plagiarized content and should be appropriate for a diverse public audience, including minors. Art that incites unlawful behavior, disrupts public order, or constitutes obscene or defamatory content is ineligible. Applications are accepted exclusively through the online portal hosted at the Glendale Arts and Culture Commission’s website. The submission requires the artist’s contact information, a biography or résumé, up to three images of prior work, two images of the proposed installation, and an artist’s statement. Proposals must describe the concept, dimensions, materials, installation and maintenance needs, and include a declared value, which cannot exceed $3,000. Proposals are accepted on a rolling basis. Submitted works are evaluated by the Art in Public Parks Committee (APPC), composed of city officials and an Arts and Culture Commissioner. Evaluation criteria include artistic excellence (35%), site appropriateness (25%), audience relevance (25%), and local preference (15%). Selected applicants will be contacted via email and must sign a Temporary Art Display Agreement, outlining terms including the exhibit duration and liability waivers. Artists are responsible for both installing and deinstalling their work with the assistance of LAC staff during standard business hours. The City of Glendale provides limited insurance through its self-insurance program or a separate policy, covering up to $3,000 for damage, theft, or vandalism during the display period. However, artists are encouraged to secure their own insurance coverage, both for property and general liability. In the case of personal injury or damages caused by the exhibited art, the City does not assume liability on behalf of the artist. The exhibited work may be featured across various city communication platforms including websites, social media, Glendale government television (GTV6), and regional outlets like GlendaleArts.org. By submitting a proposal, artists grant the city the irrevocable right to use photographs and recordings of their work for public promotion without compensation. Questions about the opportunity may be directed to the City of Glendale by email at ArtsAndCulture@GlendaleCa.gov.
