Documenting the Composition of Clinicians Providing Abortion Care Grant

The Society of Family Planning is offering the "Documenting the Composition of Clinicians Providing Abortion Care" funding opportunity to support research on the abortion care workforce in the United States, particularly in the post-Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization era. This grant seeks to generate quantitative data on the types of clinicians providing medication and procedural abortion care, as well as the volume of abortion services they deliver. While the abortion care workforce includes a broad range of roles, this opportunity is strictly focused on licensed clinicians functioning within their scope of practice, such as obstetricians and gynecologists, family medicine physicians, internists, doctors of osteopathic medicine, certified nurse-midwives, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants/associates. The primary goal of this funding opportunity is to produce empirical evidence with clear, strategic implications for clinical education, health service delivery systems, public policy, and the structures that support the abortion care workforce. Projects must utilize data from the post-Dobbs period and are encouraged to leverage existing datasets such as electronic health records or claims data. The Society emphasizes funding projects that demonstrate high methodological rigor and prioritize generalizability to broader U.S. abortion care settings. Applications must be submitted by July 7, 2025, at 8:59 pm PT/11:59 pm ET. Awards will be announced in late August 2025, with immediate availability of funds. Grants will be made to tax-exempt organizations on behalf of a named principal investigator, and membership in the Society is not required. Projects may request up to $75,000 in funding and must be completed within 18 months. Funding also covers processing fees for two open-access publications published within two years of project completion. Applicants are required to submit an online application form, a project summary (250 words), a detailed proposal narrative (7–9 pages), a budget and budget narrative, team biosketches or resumes, and proof of the institution’s tax-exempt status. Review criteria include methods (50%), impact (20%), relevance (10%), team positionality (10%), and team expertise (10%). The Society seeks projects informed by its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Vision and strongly encourages proposals that elevate the expertise and skills of Black and Indigenous researchers and researchers of color.
