Grant Description

The Saint Paul Business Awards Program, organized annually by the Saint Paul City Council, invites nominations and applications from local businesses that exemplify outstanding contributions to their community. Established in 2015 in partnership with the Open for Business initiative, the awards are intended to celebrate businesses that help create a welcoming, inclusive, and vibrant city environment. Now entering its ninth year, the program highlights the integral role small businesses play in strengthening Saint Paul neighborhoods—not just through economic activity, but also through fostering community connections and resilience. Nominations for the 2025 Business Awards will open on September 1, 2025, and will be accepted until October 17, 2025, at 12:00 PM Central Time. All applications for businesses who wish to be considered directly must be submitted by October 24, 2025, also by 12:00 PM Central Time. Eligible businesses must be located within Saint Paul city limits. Community members, residents, employees, and business owners are encouraged to either nominate deserving businesses or apply directly through the city’s official website. The awards are presented in five categories, each with a specific focus. The Alice O'Brien Award recognizes a woman-owned business that demonstrates a strong commitment to equity and empowerment. The Good Neighbor Award is given to a business that prioritizes community improvement. The Traditions Award honors a business with a legacy of at least 20 years in Saint Paul. The People’s Choice Award recognizes a business admired for its excellence by local residents. Lastly, the New Kid on the Block Award goes to a business that opened within the past five years. Past recipients have described the recognition as deeply meaningful, offering both personal and public affirmation of their dedication and service. All submissions will be reviewed by a selection committee composed of past award recipients. This committee will evaluate nominations and applications based on alignment with the values and criteria outlined for each category. Winners will be formally honored during an upcoming Saint Paul City Council meeting in October 2025. The program does not provide monetary awards, but serves as a prestigious local recognition designed to uplift and spotlight exceptional Saint Paul businesses. While no explicit evaluation rubric or scoring is described, the focus on community impact, business longevity, innovation, and public support is emphasized throughout.
