The Alexander and Margaret Stewart Trust Fund

The Stewart Trust offers annual grants to tax-exempt nonprofit organizations serving residents of Washington, D.C., with a primary focus on health and medical care. While the Trust broadly supports healthcare initiatives, it does not fund endowments, capital campaigns, building projects, or scholarships to individuals or on behalf of individuals. The application process includes a Letter of Inquiry (LOI) stage for first-time applicants. This initial submission is required before a full application can be considered. The LOI must be completed through the Trustโs online grant application system. Applicants who have received a grant from the Stewart Trust within the past three years are exempt from this LOI requirement and may proceed directly to the full application. Returning and LOI-approved applicants must complete a full proposal through the online platform. Required components include organizational information, project descriptions, budgetary figures, and supporting documents such as financial statements and proof of tax-exempt status. If supporting files are not available electronically, they may be mailed to the Trustโs office, with prior notice to the Trust via email. Grant applications must be submitted by September 19, 2025, unless a waiver is granted. Funding decisions are communicated no later than December of the same year. The Trust may request follow-up interviews or site visits as part of the review process. Annual reports for existing grantees are due by February 21, 2025.
