Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation Grant
This grant provides funding to nonprofit organizations in specific eastern U.S. states for projects that focus on human needs, environmental stewardship, education, and community vitality.
The Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation, an arm of Dominion Energy, provides philanthropic support to communities in which the company operates. In 2024 alone, the Foundation and Dominion’s employee giving program contributed over $16.5 million of the company’s total $46.3 million community investment. Through its charitable grants, the Foundation supports initiatives that align with four priority areas: Basic Human Needs, Community Vitality, Education, and Environmental Stewardship. The Foundation emphasizes strengthening the communities where Dominion Energy has a direct presence, including areas where it supplies electricity or natural gas or holds significant infrastructure and business interests. Grants are available to nonprofit organizations with valid 501(c)(3) status that operate within eligible geographic locations. These include most of Virginia and South Carolina; northeast North Carolina; parts of Connecticut, Rhode Island, and West Virginia. Organizations based in Ohio, Utah, and parts of North Carolina formerly serviced by Dominion Energy are no longer eligible, due to a transition in utility ownership to Enbridge. Furthermore, entities without 501(c)(3) status, individuals, religious programs, fraternal or political groups, and those with discriminatory service policies are ineligible. Applicants must demonstrate alignment with the Foundation’s focus areas, and applications must reflect a direct benefit to communities within the specified service areas. Most grants range from $1,000 to $15,000. Exceptional projects that strongly align with Dominion’s mission and priorities may receive larger awards. However, funding is competitive, and many eligible applications may not receive support due to budget limitations. Funding decisions are made twice a year. For the 2026 calendar year, the first cycle opens on January 12 and closes February 20, with decisions communicated in May. The second cycle opens August 3 and closes September 11, with decisions expected in November. Grant funds are typically disbursed within two weeks of the award notification. Applicants are required to register and maintain an updated cause profile on Benevity, Dominion Energy’s grantmaking platform. This includes completing a Self-Certification Declaration, which must be current at the time of application. In 2026, all payments will be made via Benevity’s disbursement process, and electronic funds transfer (EFT) registration is encouraged to avoid payment delays or lost checks. A completed cause profile and certification are prerequisites for submitting a grant application. Applications are accepted online. Dominion Energy offers virtual office hours throughout each grant cycle to assist nonprofit organizations with questions related to the application process, timeline, eligibility, and use of the Benevity platform. While these sessions are optional and do not affect advancement or selection, they provide applicants with clarity and guidance. Grant submissions are reviewed based on alignment with focus areas, geographic eligibility, and the potential for meaningful community impact. The Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation operates on a recurring, biannual grant cycle. This structure provides nonprofits with multiple opportunities to apply each year and allows the Foundation to support a diverse range of community-driven projects. Award decisions are communicated uniformly to all applicants, and timely disbursement ensures that organizations can quickly begin or continue impactful work in their communities.
